I was given an older Johnson 2HP outboard that looks relatively new and in good shape....if I can get it to run.

First question is how can I find out the year this was made.

Model number 2R79A
Serial Number E5029395

Second: I went through and checked all gaskets and they look good except the head gasket. I tried to remake it with some gasket material and it fired right up for a few seconds and then quit. It didn't hold up and blew another hole in the gasket. It wasn't in the same place so I don't think the head is warped. It seems to blow out at the holes that let water pass through. Do I need special gasket material if I am going to make it myself or should I just purchase a gasket for it? Thanks for the help

Re: Help with Johnson O/B

It is a 1979 2 hp johnson outboard. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE YOUR OWN GASKETS!!! The head gasket for that motor is only $3 and change. You should use gasket sealer for it nothing buy perfect seal. The holes are in the gasket to let water thru the head to cool it and the cylinder head cover. Its only 4 bolts so if it still leaks you have a warped head. chances are your gasket sucked... Just kidding.... New all the way good luck
