Hi,

I know this subject has been beat to death on this board but after searching all the threads my problem seems a little different.

I have a 1967 Mercury/Kiekhaefer 39 3.9 HP outboard serial number 2375447. It has the F-N-R
lever on the powerhead. I dropped the l/u to replace the impeller, dug out all the old impeller pieces, put in new impeller and fired it up.

I did all this using the Selor manual which IMHO is pretty much a POS. And of course I played with the propeller and the driveshaft before reading the fine print so the gears were totally messed up. I took the advice here, put the shift lever in neutral on the powerhead then did the same thing on the l/u.

I THOUGHT I had the l/u in neutral because the prop spun freely in both directions with no resistance or clicking. Fired it up and now I only have neutral. It won't shift into reverse or forward.

Can someone please explain (dumb it down) how to tell exactly what gear the l/u is in and how to get it there? Tried the socket over the splines method and none of my SAE or metric sockets fit so it's going to have to be the wrench method. I really can't tell what gear is where or where I'm starting from, I assume it's still in neutral since the prop is still spining freely.

I'm not sure where to start other than grabbing the shift shaft with a pair of pliers. I'll reinstall it in any gear you tell me to, I just want this thing buttoned up.

Do I move the lever on the powerhead first and then move the shift shaft or does it matter?

One last question and thank you for your patience. I still have no water out the peehole. When I re-assembled the water pump, I had a rubber O-ring and the wider in width ring called something like "water disperser" or something like that. Can someone tell me what order these need to be installed on the drive shaft?

Sorry for the long post, I've been working on this boat for 2 years and this is the last thing I have to fix and I'm on the water. Thank you to those who have already answered similar questions, I at least have a clue where I'm going with this.

Thanks,
Mike
