I did a rebuild on a 470 Was wondering if anybody has ever swapped out the generator/alt. that is on the crankshaft and put in a harmonic balancer and a belt drive alt. on one?
I have been told that those alt. are not that reliable, so don't know why it wouldn't work.
Any help with this would appreciated
thank you

the outboard stator that mercruiser put underneath the damper was limited on output (really really low output). additionally, it requires a water-cooled voltage regulator that is prone to failure. the voltage regulator is about $500. the stator coil is extremely simple, however that is not the failure point.

the aftermarket alternator kits are cheaper and give you the ability to power a radio as well as the lights.

thanks for the replys. As part of the upgrade all i see is the pulley that is bolted to the rotor. of the old alternator. Is there anything that balances the crankshaft, IE; harmonic balancer. Every kit that i have seen doesn't address this issue. I am missing something.

The flywheel is balanced so no need for balancer, just remove stator

Thank you Faztbullet i was wondering about that. The stator is doesnt working anymore and the rotor has a magnet missing so i can pull the rest of them out and i am good to go.

So then i am looking at buying a rotor or a 12 lb. harmonic balancer. The 12lb being the weight of the rotor.
