Help with my first boat!

I just bought a Pro-V with a 1989 Johnson 60hp VRO. The VRO is disabled and I mixed a 50:1 ratio. I took it out today for the first time and it ran great for 30 min. I was running it wide open and it quite. The only way to start it and keep it running was to have it wide opem and then it only made 3 mph and ran rough and smokey. It did seem to run better with the motor tilted up higher. I took it home and ran the motor in a barrel and it ran better but was running very rich. Any thoughts? Thanks Mike

was it running hot? start with the basics, check, compression, and spark on all cylinders, and post numbers, spark should just 7/16 inch with spark tester.

would the engine rev up and just not go anywhere?

Boat did not seem to be running hot.
Check spark it was good.
Did not check compression.
When it is running I noticed that fuel was leaking out of the frount of the carberators. I took the auto prime hose off and noticed that when the motor was running fuel was still being pumped out of the hose. I it did not matter if it was in the auto or manual position. Is it suppose to do this?

NO! The lever on the primer must be parallel with the solenoid body for normal operation and should only pass fuel when the key is pushed in during the start process (choke/prime). If the lever is turned perpendicular to the solenoid body, it will pass fuel all the time. This is the emergency start mode that would be required if you had a dead battery and had to rope start the motor, or if the wiring or solenoid failed. Fuel pouring out the carbs is also a sign that the float in that carb is stuck open or that the inlet needle and seat are not seating properly which allow fuel to continuously pump into the carb.

Well I replaced the electric primer. I took it apart and it was was stuck in the open position, always letting fuel through. Motor seems to run fine now. I will have to take it out on the water to day and see.
