need pros, cons and opinions about following boats.

2000 maxum 2300 scr with mercury outdrive
1999 four winns sun downer 245 with volvo duo prop

My guess is that the Maxum is an Alpha Drive. If so, I give the edge to the Volvo if you can get service easily in your locale. I like Maxums, but I believe the Four Winns is probably a little higher quality. I know the SCR and it can handle reasonably big water and has a lot of stowage. I do not know the Sun Downer, and I am curious about the deadrise (depth of V). Where are you going to boat?

With boats this age, the care and maintaince is the most important factory in the selection. However, if both boats are well care for, then the Four Winns is a much better built boat. Maxums were produced by Brunswick and some were made in the Bayliner factory. They also used very cheap hardward.

As for Merc vs Volvo, if the both are dual props, than its a toss up, if the Merc is an Alpha 1, then the Volvo DP is a much better drive.

20 degree bottom should be relatively equal in rough water. I am leaning pretty hard towards the Four Winns depending on condition as Dave has noted. Should have no problem with service in your general area.

if i were to launch out of long beach would any of those two make it to catalina safely of will i need a larger boat? thanks for the help
