I couldn't get my motor to run and after some trouble shooting I discovered that the carb float was stuck shut and wasn't letting any fuel in. When I tried to take it out I discovered that the screw that holds the pin in place that the float pivots on was bent (no idea how that can even happen but the head was obviously bent).

So i figured that the bent head was causing something to bind and wouldn't allow the float to open. I got a replacement screw that is straight but when I tighten it down to hold the pin in place the float wont operate, and when I loosen it enough for the float to go up and down the pin is very close to falling out.

What am I doing wrong? What can i do differently?

Thank you.

When did this issue start? It sounds like a previous owner messed it up. You have either an incorrect or damaged needle or pin or float. I would probably install a new carb kit.
Carburetor repair kit. Kit includes gaskets, float & needle valve.
Fits: 5B, 8B & 9.8B 2-stroke models.
Part #: 369871221M
List Price (MSRP): $77.00

It just started. I was doing some work on my boat and I took it off the kicker bracket and laid it down in the garage for a day and when i put it back on it was doing this. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but the timing is interesting. I'll look at getting a carb kit. Thanks.

Timing is adjusted by link. Let me know if you need a carb kit. You should be able to snug that pin all the way down and have the float free.

So after a lot of tinkering and testing I was able to determine that the issue is not with the screw, the pin or the float. When I take the Needle off and snug the screw down on the pin the float moves freely. When i put the needle on and snug the pin down it locks the float in place. It seems as if the needle is too long. As a temporary fix i bent the tab on the float that the needle hangs on and this allows a slight bit of movement, just enough to open and close the needle valve but i dont think it's opening as much as it should.

As long as the float is parallel to the carb casting when the carb is inverted, you should be OK with float height. Bending the tab is how that is adjusted. It doesn't need to open very much. As for the needle, you may have an incorrect part.

The Float is far from parallel to the carb casting but it seems to be working properly for now. I'll get a new needle just to satisfy my curiosity. Thanks for your help.
