My uncle gave me an old Johnson 3hp and I have a few questions on it. The model number is JW17 sn is B38931. First what year is this motor looks to be around the 50's? Next what should the needles be set to? Also does this have a water pump in it and where is it? where does the water go in /come out? Had it running but the carb needs to be cleaned, and noticed that there was no water coming out of the motor. Are parts still avalible for these?

Re: help with old johnson seahorse 3hp

Engine is a 1961/62 3hp Johnson. Water pump sits directly on top of the lower unit. Water intake are the holes, slots, screens below the water pump area and abopve the propeller. Water exist as a fine spray halfway down and to the rear of the long exhaust housing.

(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)
(J. Reeves)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle valve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, waiting for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Thanks for the info. How do you get the lower unit off. I removed the four 7/16 head bolts and it broke free but wont come off. Do you have to remove the flywheel or something? Or are there some hidden bolts somewhere that holds the shaft in place. How about parts? can they still be found?

Some of those engine have a pin going thru the upper portion of the driveshaft that must be aligned with a slot in order for the driveshaft to drop out.

If this is the case, apply just a slight bit of downward pressure on the lower unit and turn the prop (or flywheel) at the same time to align the pin with the slot.

So I assume you got it off huh? Make sure the o-ring is in the groove at the top of the shaft and grease it lightly before reinstalling or you will really have trouble getting it off next time.

There are no gaskets. A smear of any gasket cement under the plate is good. Nothing anywhere else except clean it up. Be sure to oil the water tube grommet in the pump housing before reinstalling also.
