The fitting in question is not necessary. You can plumb your single piece hose directly through the transom. Advantage from single piece hose is you have less places that may possibly leak. By using these fittings youll have three more possible problem areas. Gear oil could leak from all and water could leak in from the hose connection at the transom.My opinion, DONT cut that single piece hose assembly, use as is.

All the connections are above the water line or inside the boat, except the connection on the drive itself. The good thing about the fitting going through the transom is that it can be sealed to prevent water from rain and waves from getting in the transom and causing rot.

The kit Qystan mentioned in previous post has a cover that mounts on outside transom, when sealed also stops water from getting in transom. The kit in pics uses hose clamps to keep hose on fittings inside and outside transom. Just not ideal in my opinion.

So are you saying it would be better to use just 1 piece of hose from reservoir to drive unit straight through the transom? if so how would you go about getting a suitable seal, must admit this would save me a few quid as i have been quoted £36 for the pieces I need, not including the £17 for the hose (mercruiser dealer)

Does the kit you have look like the one Don S posted or might it look like the one Qystan described in his earlier post? If it is the single piece hose the outboard section is stainless braid with threaded fitting on outdrive end and made to rubber hose on the other end.

all i have at the moment is the bottle and bracket, was going to order the parts this week, until i read your post, any idea what the part numbers might be for the hose you mentioned?

That braided hose and all that goes with it is going to cost a LOT more than the few fittings you have part numbers for. Just get a piece of rubber hose suitable for oil from your local auto parts store. There is absolutely no pressure on the hose, so there isn't any big deal with it.<br />If you want to go through the transom with just a hole, just be sure it's well above the water line, and seal the wood so it doesn't start rotting. <br />You're making this a lot harder job than it is.

Have to agree with Don S about cost. The kit I was refering to is a complete kit with bottle, fittings, braided hose, through the hull hose cover ect. I think it sells for around $175.00. The part # for this kit is 69622A7. Sorry Neil, I ***-U-ME-D you had a kit like the one Qystan had described, and wanted to cut the hose to install it. From your last post,Qystans part #s list, from Dons pics, or a single piece of hose sealed through the transom is your cheapest way out.

Recieved today part number 22-16739 (#8 on the diagram) and this does not fit where the oil level plug goes?? any idea waht the correct part number would be for this on an alpha one gen one??

Neil<br /><br />Rechecked the part number just to be sure, same p/n. <br /><br />The kit was listed under the Gen 2 drive parts, no such kit is listed for the Gen 1. <br /><br />The square oil bottle kit also lists the same p/n.<br /><br />I doubt the vent plugs are different. Vent plug p/n 10-79953Q2 for Gen 1, 10-79953 for Gen 2 91-95, 10-79953A2 for 96-97, 10-7995A3 for 98 and up.

So I take it I cant get this part for a gen 1? is there no other kit available?
