Trying to put a puzzle together.

I picked up a QD19 - 1688609 1958 10HP and a 10012 04712 1956 10HP. I'm trying to get a running motor. Both are missing lower units, drive shafts and lower shift rods. The QD19 is missing the magneto plate. The Evinrude has a complete top end and was a runner according to the PO.

I would really like to get the Evinrude put back together because I like the style of the hood better and it would match my 18 Rude.

I know the leg and lower units are different, the 10012 has the extra bolt that attaches the lower unit.

I found a QD21 2091585 1960 10HP that's available it appears to be complete, but the cavitation plate is broken and bent, the broken part is there. The prop has one blade bent over. Lower unit matches the QD19

I have a upper gear case off a Johnson 5.5 or 7.5 that is the same color as the QD19 but it has the one piece shift rod, the part # looks like 81?960, can't read it because the casting blocks out of the numbers. Parts manuals show the gear cases should be the same as the QD19

My plan is to take the 56 Rude 10012, remove the leg. Add the leg from the QD19, the upper case from the 5.5. or 7.5, the lower case, gears, shift rod and drive shaft from the QD21. If I can fix the prop I should have everything.

The only thing I can't confirm is if the QD21 1960 driveshaft will work with the 1956 10012 Evinrude head. I can't find a part number for the QD21 driveshaft, same year Rude 10020 is shaft 307755, the '56 10012 uses a 303860 shaft. I also see the crank shaft numbers don't match

Can anyone confirm if the 1960 QD21 shaft would work with the '56 Evinrude 10012 head?

Sorry it's so long and I hope it's not too confusing. Thanks for any help.

Looking to make a Frankenrude eh? :)

Your plan has some problems.

Part number for the QD21 driveshaft is 305318, not 303860 like the Sportwin uses.

HT Thanks for the info, It looks like I'll be better off combining the QD19 and QD21, I'll have to get a better look at the 21, see if it's a short or long

The QD 19 and QD21 are much easier to combine. I wouldn't try to merge a 5 bolt engine and a 4 bolt engine although I'm sure with work you could make it work! It's usually a lot easier just to find a parts engine for the one you want to fix. Personally I like the look of the QD19 as one of the best QD's, but the 4 bolt lower unit was weaker and a known issue.

Johnson vs Evinrudes back then wasn't a given. Agree w/^, try to find a correct donor. Or do (due) the diligence to be sure. :)

Yea, if you want to have parts compatibility on a QD or Sprtwin, you want to stay with 1959 and later. The '58 had the smaller lower unit, like the later motors, but it still was a lot like the '57. The '54 to '57 QD had the 5 bolt lower unit, like the 18's had and '53 and earlier, while they had a heftier lower unit, like the Fastwin, they were back to a four bolt mounting. From '59 to '63, the only major differences are the engine covers.

Well I have almost finished my beast. Need to paint the cowl.

I ended up finding a QD21 at a junk yard that was a little rough on the lower end

It was all there but it looked like it had been run over, trashed the prop and broke the cavitation plate. I'm still looking for a prop but the cav. plate was welded.

The QD19 had compression of 90+. I like the look of the QD19 much better than the 21. It was missing the lower unit, the tiller handle, the shift rod cover plate, the choke knob, the water tube, the drive shaft and all the electronics.

the QD21 was 60ish on compression. The Electronics looked brand new. The lower unit was donated as well as some misc pieces.

I used a tiller handle off a Evinrude 7522 that was laying around. Installed a Mikuni pump, pics posted on another thread. Got it all together and gave it a paint job.

See if the link works, first time trying to post vid from Photobucket.

I think I called it an FD in the video:facepalm:

Re: Help with piecing together a QD 19 or a 10012

Well I ended up finding a prop for $10. Today it warmed up a little and I was able to make it home about 5:30. Asked my son if he wanted to go give the boat motor a test run. He jumped at the chance.

It fired up right away and ran very smooth. I need to tighten the high speed fitting, it spins counter clockwise when you throttle up. It also wants to pop out of reverse, but not forward. Hoping I can solve this with a little adjustment.

Here is my son on his first run. Click pic to view video.
