i took my lower unit down today,i didnt remove the prop as i couldnt get it off?is there a reason why the prop needs to come off? as i suspected the impeller was missing all but one blade and it looks like it disintegrated into pieces. i see alot of small pieces of impeller lodged in the area where i would attach the motor flush muff.my problem is i dont know how to disassemble the pump. i removed the top of the pump but does that long shaft have to come out as well or can everything slide over that shaft? the motor is a 1974 merc 850.also there seems to be some small burrs on the shaft preventing the old impeller removal. i am assuming i can pass a file or some emery cloth on the shaft to remove the burrs? ive already purchased the water pump kit and would like to go fishin so thanks for help

Re: help with pump

everything comes up and off the shaft, there is a slot between the impeller and shaft, its called a keyway with a key, this makes the shaft turn the impeller, sometimes its hard to break loose, be sure not to lose it and put it back with new impeller GL
