We put the state registration stickers on my wife's boat on hypalon pieces which are cemented to the pvc hull after thouroughly washing them with acetone and allowing them to dry thouroughly. It appears they are very lightly held by the sticky back of the state stickers. Has anyone run into this before, and if so, how did you remedy the situation?

On my old inflatable, the stickers are attached inside and outside the transom, as was instructed many years ago by an officer with the state game and fish division. Now that we have the Homeland Security folks, I was told the stickers had to be affixed to the bow. They do not accept the boards some put on the front of the boat I am told.

Right now, I wish I had affixed them to the transom, but it is a little late for that now. They get a few dollars for extra stickers, so I would like to avoid purchasing a second set.

I have had good success with these so far, after having had to replace a lost set of stickers in the past. The plastic doesn't expand and contract so the stickers don't seem to work loose.

Thank you, Peter. It did not seem the adhesive stuck to the hypolon very well as it does to wood and fiberglass, but maybe it will increase its holding power with time. Your reply makes me feel much better about the situation.

Re: Help with Registration Stickers, Please

I fixed the problem by adhering the stickers to a thick piece of vinyl (like a rearview mirror hangtag).... stickers adher to that nicely.
Then I installed industrial velcro on the hull and vinyl on the front hull near the CF numbers....
As added insurance against losing them I used a small length of 1/8" nylon braided line to tie them to the closest D-ring.......

Works perfect and I can roll up the boat without the stickers coming unglued........

I use the registration sticker holders in the link from the previous post. They are made from PVC and adhere well to my Zodiac (also PVC) using the glue from my patch kit.

I don't roll my boat up for storage, but the tube inflation pressure changes a lot due to temperature swings and the holders are still secure.

You need a special solvent called Astisol made in France for helping pvc glue & fabrics to stick on top hypalon fabrics...

Re: Help with Registration Stickers, Please

Thanks, fellows.

I glued the hypalon to the boat by using hypalon glue on the patch followed by PVC cement as written on the instructions which came with the patches. The parches seem to be strongly held on the hull. My concern was that when the stickers were put on the hypalon, the did not feel as if the glue on the stickers got good adhesion on the hypalon. Guess we will just have to use the boat and see if the stickers stay on the hypalon.

Re: Help with Registration Stickers, Please

as far as sticking PVC to hypalon (non-structural), the PVC "AVON" name labels on a lot of older Hypalon Avon Rovers used to fall off after a few years.

I read of many people reattaching them with 3M 5200.

so I tried it on my almost nameless 3.40, and it worked great at sticking the PVC logo pieces to the hypalon... been on there 5 or 6 years now.

Re: Help with Registration Stickers, Please

That is a great tip, Howard. The "Avon" stickers came off my Rover several years ago also and were not reinstalled successfylly with two part hypalon adhesive. Knowing about using the 5200 to put them back on is good information.

The hypalon patches for the registration stickers seem to be holding at this point, but now I know how to reapply them if they do not stay on. Thank you.
