Hello Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has experience replacing the Teleflex steering cable on a 1995 Capri 1700 LS with the Force 120 engine?

For the last couple of years the steering on my boat has been getting stiffer. This year, after retrieving the boat from storage, the steering was to stiff to be safe so I figured out that I have the Teleflex rack steering system and I bought the replacement cable (which arrives today I hope). My problem is removing the existing cable.

I successfully removed the rack from the helm unit. I disconnected the cable from the steering arm on the motor. I unscrewed the nut that connects the cable to the tilt shaft. Here's were the problem starts. When I try to slide the cable out of the tilt shaft I can only get it out about half way before the cable binds between the hole in the engine well and the tilt shaft. Seems that the hole in the engine well is somewhat forward of the axis of the tilt shaft causing the cable to bind when I try to remove it.

Now I could easily remove to old cable by cutting it with a hack saw, but how do I install the new one without damaging it? From what I can see I would have to dismount the engine from the transom in order to get enough space to complete the installation. I don't have the facilities for such an effort.

Therefore, I was wondering if it would be safe to drill a new hole in the engine well, slightly aft of the existing hole, that is on the axis of the tilt shaft through which I could run the new cable? Does anybody see a problem with this plan?

Thanks so much for any thoughts.

Happy Boating!

Welcome to iboats!

If your splashwell is similar to mine, you should be able to remove the motor mounting bolts, loosen the clamps, and slide the motor over to port far enough to remove the cable. That's what I needed to do when I swapped motors.
