i have a 1985 350 merc. I/O just replaced the motor last year and i am having problems.. while we where stopped and tried to put the boat into reverse the motor shut off.. now this didn't happen every time but it always happened at the most in opertune times.

also while winterizing the motor the it stopped pulling the antifreeze into the motor.. would that be the water pump? does it need to be replaced? thanks for the help..

Sounds like your shift cable needs to be replaced.

I'm not sure what you are trying to describe here.

Ayuh,...

It sounds like your Lower Shift Cable is Dying,... It'll need Changing...

You can replace the Impeller while you're headed into change the Cable...

At the top of the forum, in the Adults Only section, you can find the Manuals to see what needs doing...

be sure to read #4 in the sticky as to why everyone is saying shift cable replacement...

after ya get yer s/m. read up on the preventive maint. items in the book. it will list all the things to do and at what intervals to do them to keep you boat happy... there are many things to do too...
impeller would be one of them... yearly inspection or replacement..

With the muffs on and you shift it cuts out also?

Then it's still the lower cable. No magic bullet here, you can try adjusting the cable but when it starts to go it goes this is a old boat, you got your moneys worth out of that cable.

Get a merc OEM cable better then the aftermarket ones it has a inner lining that Don s says is far superior to aftermarket.

You can also thank Don s for the site where to buy it.
