Help with rod holder selection...Please!

Hey all,<br /><br />I want some rod holders on my 15' Smokercraft BIG Fisherman but can't seem to decide what's the best setup, that's where you come in. The boat has wide gunwales (6"+) so I could use the flush mount tubes but I could also used the quick release kind like the FISH-ON holders. I was thinking of four holders, two up front and two in the back. I'd like to troll and use these for general lake fishing. I've heard that the tube holders are a pain to get the pole out of quickly, no experiance there. Also the pole holder come in straight, 15, 30 degree angles. If I troll with poles in the bow would I risk getting line caught in the prop? What a bout a 4 pole rack type holder in the rear of the boat? Too many choices! Also, I've got three young boy's that like to fish and I'd like to have places for them to set there poles, although most of the time they stand and fish right along side the boat! <br /><br />Sorry for rambling...<br /><br />Thanks!

I prefer the type with a flush mount base that allow you to adjust the angle and remove the holder when not in use. I also have 2 flush mount tubes that I find come in handy for a quick place to safely put down a rod in a hurry (like when I get a big one on the "other rod")

I like the Fish-On style you mentioned. Mainly because they are so adjustable and removable. I don't like the fixed position tubes at any angle because your stuck with whatever they are and for trolling multiple rods you need to get them spread out as much as possible.<br />The multiple rack in the back of the boat is great "IF" everyone can get to his/her rod when needed. In smaller boats that probably wouldn't be practical. <br />Trolling with rods positioned in the front of the boat does pose a problem when turning. You just have to be careful or pull in the outside rod when you turn. Another reason for the adjustable rod holders. You can make the forward rods point strait out so they clear the motor better.

I have Scottys with flush mounts but if I could do it over Id get Ram Rod, rod holders with the ball mounts. Can adjust at any angle. Reasonably priced.

Hey, Piet.<br /><br />If you don't have the best (and there is zero agreement on what that is) you aren't allowed to catch any fish!!<br /><br />Every style has it's advantages. YOU have to decide which ones fit your taste.<br /><br />I tie-wrap pieces of PVC pipe to my boat's rails. It is the only way to go and costs pennies.
