Would someone please help me. I own a 1966 Elgin model no 574-60621. My question how do I go about replacing my old cable and pulley system with a Telflex Safe T QC mechanical system.
Thank you

Tou will need a steering adapter http://www.iboats.com/Front-Mount-S...08854118--session_id.420001064--view_id.40159

and

you will need a bracket fro the front of your moroe if you can not adapt the old cable steeriung plate.

all those accessories along with the telflex steering unit and wheel.

For that older boat and motor a cable system really will work fine so.....why not install new cable, pulleys and springs?

Re: Here are some pics of the motor

For your old motor you'll need one of these...
http://www.marinepartssource.com/ne...LEX&desc=Transom Mount Steering Cable Support

Mounts on the transom to hold the tube to carry the cable. Also includes the adapter for the front of the motor. Not cheap!!!!

Then you'll need to measure and purchase a new Teleflex Steering system with wheel. Not Cheap!!!

Or, like Bob says restore the cable and pulley system you currently have for less than $100 bucks.

Choice is yours.

I really don't like that type of system, had to much trouble with it cable was always stacking on me and coming off the steering shaft under dash. I would have to take up slack all the time. And then one day while out cruising the lake the cable unwrapped and the steering failed completely out in the middle of the lake. don't ever want to deal with that again.
I am sure you can understand my point.

I don't mind the expense as long as it works and I don't end up having trouble loosing my steering ability while I am out in the boat in the middle of the lake hundreds and hundreds of feet from shore with no steering. I don't know if you ever had that happen to you but loosing control of your boat is. OH! NO LOOK OUT EVERYONE STAY CLEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, but you definitely will not want to go back to that type of steering system after that and experience like that.

Let me tell you!.

I already purchased a Tele flex safe QC steering kit and it wasn't cheap. And I know I needed some type of bracket that mounted to the front of my motor to connect the steering cable from the transom mount but wasnt really sure what and were to get it. Thanks for the help Bob.
