Hey guys and gals! I just picked up a 1973 Johnson 85hp model: 85ESL73M. It runs great and included the control box and cables. I mounted it to my 1982 15' Dixie but now Im stumped as to trying to get the steering hooked up.

The old steering cable was cut but it was a Steer Master Mark II 13ft B1A158 (that number might be wrong, its worn out). It seems the parts I need are obsolete so I was just hoping someone could tell me the length of the steering arm and if a Teleflex 13ft steering cable would work. The steering wheel appears to be a rotary type but I dont know enough about these steering systems to know for sure. If there is only rotary and rack then its definitely a rotary because it doesn't have the bar behind the wheel like my buddies boat does.

Id appreciate any help and wish you all happy and safe boating!

You could probably go to the teleflex website and it should show you how to measure for a new cable. It will also show the different types of cables and attachments.

Thanks for the reply. I checked out their website but don't see anywhere to measure for cables/attachments. Do you happen to have a direct link? Its doesn't even have to be Teleflex just a measurement guide would be great.

That's perfect for the steering cable thanks alot!

Do you happen to have a source to measure the steering arm bar? This motor is 1973 and the part they list is obsolete but Im sure there are plenty of arms out there that are close enough. Here's a pic of the motor mount where the steering cable comes through and the tie for the steering on the motor.
