Quit charging awhile back and Sat. I lost my tach. Pulled cover off and smelled a little burned so looked at regulator and it a little melted and yellow wires black where they come out. So it's probably bad? Can I test it? My manual goes to 1989 and doesn't seem to cover this type regulator. Then how bout the stator? I can only get bout 40 mph and maybe 4700 rpms. Used to run better not good up and out power either. How to test stator and can a bad stator ruin the vr?

Thanks for any help. vr #18736A11 Motor #OC218517

Oh and will this work?http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/01-090-1.html?id=HqidrKqU

That's a 40 amp water cooled regulator. Unreliable and very expensive. No, the snomobile regulator won't work.

There should be about 15 Volts AC on the stator wires at idle. If it's low, disconnect the regulator and test again. A shorted regulator can pull it down pretty hard and possibly cause trouble with the spark.

If that's good, connect the regulator. The battery voltage should rise after engine start, indicating charging. Typically you'd see 12.2 V before start, and 13 or more right after start at idle, a little higher if you rev it.

Best bet would be to convert to a dual 20 amp regulator system. For all new parts, CDI makes a kit for it. Flywheel is the same. Stator and regulators change out.

If you don't need a lot of power, you can change out the flywheel and stator and install a 16 amp rectifier on the switchbox mounting plate. That works also. Winter's here, and parts are usually plentiful on eBay.

hope it helps

Ok I disconnected the two yellow stator wires. Multimeter on ac volts. Is that checking between yellow wire and ground or across each other? I couldn't get a reading between ground and yellow wire it just jumped all over the place at idle. Thanks

Thanks but I think thats for cdi regulator. I'm now wondering about the stator...

They should be isolated from ground, thus making that reading not significant. The reading is between the two wires.

Resistance reading should be very low, much less than 1 ohm between the yellow wires, and infinity between either one and ground.

Look up "full wave bridge rectifier" to understand the circuitry involved.

Ok now I'm totally confused. The reading between the two yellow stator wires is jumping all over usually 4 digits. Also found something else. Put multimeter black lead on starter ground and red on hot side of starter solenoid and it jumps around from 3 to 9 volts. Put black lead on batt negative side, red the same it shows 12. Thot possible bad ground so cleaned and put jumper cables from battery ground to starter ground. Helped a little but still varies from 8 - 12. During all this engine idled fine. Also unhooked red wire coming out of regulator and the yellows are off too. What now?

Also can I run with voltage regulator disconnected?

Sounds like you're trying to use an overly sensitive digital meter. Use a cheap radio shack (or equiv) analog meter.

If the ground were that bad, it wouldn't even crank. Again, I suspect a fussy meter.

Yes, it'll run just fine without the regulator hooked up. Don't miss any fishing. Just remember that the battery is used for starting and trim and whatever else you run off'n it, (lights, bilge pump, livewells, etc) so when you drain it, you ain't going to start the main engine unless you have a 300 lb. gorilla to rope start it.

Converting to a dual regulator, you have to change the stator. You can't feed 2 regulators with one coil. Just thought I'd anticipate that question. :D

hope it helps

Thanks John! I was gettin a little antsy - afraid I was gonna miss my fishin trip this weekend....

I've got plenty of good batteries and a good charger. Need to go again before winter hits.
