help with water pump

have a 1987 johnson 150 put in new water pump but does not work!!!! is it possible to put the water pump in backward. did not find a key when i remove the old one so is their a key way or does it run off a slot.

There needs to be a key.Take it apart again and find the old key (it may be a wedge).the impeller won't turn without it.

i cant find the key what do i ask for? what size is it?

The key should have been included in the kit. It is called the Impeller Key and is OMC part number 0331107. There is a slot in the shaft that it fits into and the impeller is slid down onto the shaft.....

thanks again for all the help. the kit i got was the impellar only so i didn't get a key i will go get one thanks again

I like to always buy the complete kit (i dont think it is that much more) whenever I replace the waterpump. I like to replace the o-rings etc on the housing, and I figure as long as I have the thing apart I may as well replace the impeller cup.
