Help with waterpump impeller!

I'm sure this is a really easy question, but it got me stumped this morning, and I was hoping someone here could shed some light on it for me.

This morning, I attempted to change the waterpump impeller on a 25HP 1999 Johnson. I removed the prop, the impeller screens, disconnected the shift linkage, and removed the lower unit from the motor. I took out the driveshaft and installed the new impeller in the cup and put the driveshaft back in. Things got interesting when I tried to put it back together. My question is twofold:

1. How do you get the water line hooked up? On this motor, it is a rigid copper tubing that slides into a rubber sleeve. The other end goes way up inside the housing to another gromit. The tube does not line up with the water input as the lower unit slides back onto the assembly. Are there any secrets here?

2. Water hookups aside, the "lower unit" comes within one half inch of the housing and seems to stop. The driveshaft if properly aligned, because if I spin the prop it is spinning the crankshaft. Am I supposed to just start tightening the nut on the bolt that is at the rear of the lower unit and let it pull the two together and then install the four bolts?

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

Kent

Kent....put the water tube in the upper section first. Then twist it around till it lines up with the water pump housing outlet. A little grease on the water tube will let it slip into the grommets easier.

To get the lower unit all the way up, turn the flywheel clockwise. This will line up the splines on the driveshat with the splines in the crankshaft.

Yes and what ever you do don't use the bolts to pull it togeather you will crush the water pump tubes.
Been there and done that and bypassed the t shirt for it.

Thanks for the advice...

OBJ, you mentioned twisting the flywheel counterclockwise which will allow the lower section to come together that last 1/2 inch.

I've put the prop back on, and I rotate that slowly, and it is turning the crank - it isn't allowing the lower unit to go up any further though. Is turning the prop any different than turning the flywheel?

Thanks again for the help.

Kent

Not really any difference Kesh. Try operating the shift lever. On occasion, the lower unit can be in the opposite gear at what the shift lever indicates. This would hold it down. Make sure the water tube is all the way up in the upper hole and that the lower unit is alined straight with the midsection.
