I have a 75 40hp evinrude that I just got. I cleaned the carb and now I want to start it, but I am having some trouble. The wires are all hooked up but I hit the key switch and nothing happens. The electric choke does work and I have 12 volts at the line side of the solenoid. Is there two wires I can short to make the starter engage?

Just out of curiosity what happens with you turn the ignition on? Does the 12v line stay 12v? Does the power out line register any voltage?

How are the terminals marked on the back of that ignition switch, and what color are the wires?

you can jump from the battery lug on the starter to the yel/red on the solonoid,if the starter engages ,disconnect the yel red and use a meter or lite to see if it energizes when the key switch is turned to start,if no,then be sure all safty lanards are working if you have them,or depending how your wired that you neutral safty switch is ok,sometimes holding key to start and moving shifter will allow the starter to engage if the neutral safty is sticking,you can also go to the starter jumping strait from positive feed on the solonoid to starter to see if it engages,if no,starter bad,or bad ground

Here are the wire colors etc.
Bat=red wire with blue stripe
M=blue wire
S=white wire
A=blue wire that goes to choke switch
M=blue with white stripe

There is also a purple wire with w white stripe that goes to the other side of the choke switch

There are also two small yellow wires on the solenoid, besides the larger black and red wires on the solenoid

I jumped from the starter side of the solenoid to the starte and it worked, so I will try wiggling the shifter to see if it is a safety holding me up

Looks like the switch is wired properly BUT time and the elements have apparently discolored the wires...... your "blue" shoulld actually be "black", "yellow" at the solenoid should be "white".

As Mike states, there is probably a safety switch problem. If so, moving the control handle slightly usually corrects that temporarily.
