I have just been given a Chrysler 45hp (1972 i think- 454DH /21287). Mechanicly its sound but the electrics are causing me a problem. There are 3 electrical wires coming out of the engine - 2 red wires that look like battery wires (are they both +ve?) and a thick bundle of wires containing 7 wires in all. Colours are Black, White, Red, Purple, Brown Blue and Green/Brown (earth cable colour?) What do they do? If any one could help it would be much appreciated. I would love to be able start her up. I have ordered a manual but its going to take upto 28 days to arrive and I'm itchin'. Thanks

Colors for wires going to the wiring harness are as follows
White Tachometer circuit
Red Battery circuit
Blue Ignition circuit
Orange Overheat circuit
Green Choke circuit
Yellow Startiing circuit
Purple Charging ciruit
Black Ground return

Depending on whether you have a magna power system or battery ignition system dictates which of these wires are in use

Are the coils on the rear of the motor or up under the flywheel?

Try and determine if you have magna power (coils under flywheel) or battery ignition (coils on rear of motor. I have pictures of some of these and I can email them to you. I am at ralgoetz@comcast.net

Hi. Firstly I think this site is an absolute godsend and thanks for your help. My engine is magna power as it has coils up under the flywheel. Thanks for the info on the wires above - I have connected them up now and that part is ready to go however I still have 2 thick guage wires leaving the engine casing which Presume are battery cables. My slight problem is that their are both red. Are they a +ve and -ve?

Red lead from battery goes to the rear of the starter solinoid located under the starter. The black lead from the battery goes to one of the mounting scews on the starters rear. I attached a photo of mine. Mine is older then yours but it should be similar

The orange wire from the harness probably dosent connect to anything on your motor. This is for a heat sensor and horn to warn you of an overheat. Also the purple wire probably dosent go anywhere either. Your motor does not charge and this would go to a voltage rectifier that your motor does not have. These are standard wiring harness and some motors dont have all the bells and whistles.
