Help with year of motor 115 hp Evinrude

I never do anything the easy way.<br /><br />I've picked up a 115 hp Evinrude. No idea the year but was told 70 something. Of course there is no tag on it (I can see where the tag was if that helps). Is there any other way to tell the year? Even an approximate year so I can get a decent manual.<br /><br />Thanks.

Take a look on the engine block for a large freeze plug. The model number will be on there.

As per the reply by OBJ, that freeze plug should be about the size of a quarter, and it should be on top of the block and near the port cylinder head gasket area.

Uhmmmm.<br /><br />I'm starting to think this thing was stolen at one point. I found the plug, but it's covered is something like JBWeld.<br /><br />Anyway to clean that up?

Assuming I'm correct (or was told correctly) that this is a mid 70's model, would a 1981 Manual be mostly correct?<br /><br />One here<br /> Ebay

Bump. Still curious about the manual.<br /><br />Reading other posts here, it looks like mine might be late 70's as it has a pee hole.

Doing some more looking. Based on what I see here, OMC Cable (1979 and later), I may have a newer unit then I thought. Definatly have the after 1979 cables based on the pictures of the pre an after cables to buy (I need cables eventually).<br /><br />How reliable a guide is this?

It's probably an 80' or better. It's go a voltage regulator. Didn't see one till 1980. If you can scrape the crap off the welsh plug and get a model, would be nice.

No go on the plug. I tried but the model number had been scraped off. From the little I could see, I think it said 79, but not one of the letters was clear so it could be an 80.<br /><br />I think I'll try for the manual.<br /><br />Thanks for the help OBJ and Joe.
