I have a Chrysler 55 HP model 559H8K . I need to replace the impeller and seal kit.
the oil was a creamy color and I asume the seals are bad. I also broke the water intake screen and need to repair that... I have removed the 6 bolts holding the lower unit on and I can't get the gearcase to drop down. I can find no access panel such as was on my evinrude to disconnect the shift rod.. what am I missing? Is the drive shaft siezed in place and it's in need of gentle help? I don't want to force anything.. any help would be appreciated...

Re: Help

If this is the one piece lower unit: Just above the lower unit there are two shock mounts covered by two aluminum plates held on by two allen head bolts each. Remove the two plates to gain access to the shift rod which you must disconnect to drop the lower unit. There is a rectangular block with a pin going through it and that pin is held by a small cotter. Remove the cotter and the pin and your lower unit should drop right down

Re: Help

I found the pin with the small cotter pin. I had to put some pressure on the lower unit to force it down. the pin was accessed after I got the L.U. down about 1" or so. Taking the shock absorber cover off didn't get me there, but it was good to see what was under the covers... thanks for you help...now, for the seals.....

Re: Help

Cost for a seal kit varies depending on where you buy one. The sierra number is 18-2630 and the quick silver number is 26-820645A 1 . The quick silver can be purchased from a mercury dealer and the sierra part can probably be purchased here at Iboats. Costs are somewhere between 35 - 50 dollars. According to your model number you have a two piece lower unit. The seal between the two lower units is not in the kit (go figure) is part number 25-841807 and costs about 3 bucks. That is also a quick silver number. Good luck

Re: Help Again Please

I have the seal kit and the impeller kit... I'm not sure how to remove the shift link seal.. is it imperative that I replace that seal? I see only one bolt to separate the two halves of the unit and I don't have that seal.. can I get by with replacing the upper shaft seal and prop shaft seal? I think most of my water leakage was from the plastic gaskets on the oil drain plugs which i will replace with the gaskets supplied with the seal kit... Thanks for you help so far... & God bless our men & women serving our country....

Re: Help

I messed up! I removed the drive shaft seal; then I found that this seal is not included in the seal kit... I hope it's still available. can anyone tell me the part number for the seal on the drive shaft located below the impeller? thanks..

Re: Help

26-F474307 however it says it is no longer availible. The quick silver kits come with them at least the one I bought two years ago did. It is under construction now but try the Shad Connection. They might still sell them or try Doug Russell. The seal between the two lower units can be made with gasket paper and non hardening permatex. I believe the only screw holding it in place you will have to take the bearing carrier off and you will need a 7/16 wrench to remove the nut down by the prop gears.
