is there any trick to remounting a lower unit on a merc 850? i get it in until about 1 inch from mating then it hits somewhere

Put teh gearcase in neutral and the MerControl in neutral. grease the driveshaft and shift shaft splines, and shove the gearcase into the midsection (motor tilted all the way up). Turn the flywheel until the driveshaft mates with the crankshaft. Now watch to see that the lower shift shaft mates with the upper shift shaft. You may need to rock the throttle handle a bit to line 'em up.

In addition to the above, make sure the water tube is aligned and engaging into the bushing in the powerhead and the waterpump in the lower unit. Sometimes it pulls loose from the powerhead when dropping the lower unit.

Something I do is to apply a little vaseline to the bottom of the exhaust tube and the inside of the exhaust tube gasket in the lower unit. Helps the tube to slide into the gasket.
