I have an issue> i have a 1989 force 125, when the muffs are on water will come out the pee hole lightly at a idle, but when muffs are off and lower unit submerged to the water intake ports in a tank, no water at idle or reved up, then side of engine is too hot to touch and starts running rough, why wont the water pump pick up the standing water in the tank, it only works with the muffs and possative flow from the hose and at that doesnt work very well...

Re: Help>>>>

You need to submerge the lower unit way up past the intake ports - up to at least where the water pump sits in the lower unit. The water pump won't suck water up through the intakes, it pushes water around, so the water level needs to be brought up that high. The pressure from the hose, if good will push water up to where it can be pushed by the pump. You may have burned up the impeller running it without water, so probably be safe to change it out anyway.

oh how high up does the water pump set is it above the stingray finn. i only ran for 2 or three minutes i will change impeller for sure. i was just worried about the rings from getting hot.. the engine when i was reving at the carbs was cutting out and popping.. should probably check the compression too huh... how hot do they have to get before it ruins something?

Re: Help>>>>

I always have the water level up just at or above the exhaust snout. always a good idea to do a compression check anyhow.

I had an old Force manual that showed pics of an impeller run dry for 20 and 30 seconds. It was quite surprising at how much damage can be done in that short of time! I'd change it if I were you.
