I nee help on a Volvo V-8 1988 model.I do not have all the info on engine at time.It is a duoprop I know it is a v-8."chevy"It has 2 barrel rochester carb.Electronic ignition. This is my neighbors houseboat with an on goig probem. The boats port engine keeps going dead when docking. The idles are the same at about 800 in gear. The throttle and the trans shifters are seperate. The throttles at 1000 rpm docking and shifting from fwd to rev the engine will die.I've checked the carb but can't see anything noticeable and were rebuilt this year.the drives were rebuilt this year, found both ign. timing set to 30 degrees and justed both to 11 as specs say.I really do not know what to do next any and all help will be apprciated thank you the Delta Breeze

Re: HELP!!

It could be the shift cut out switch hanging up. Usually it's the lower cable going bad. I'm a Merc guy too, but it sounds like that could be the problem. Does it shift hard? J.

Re: HELP!!

The only VP 2 barrel duoprop chev V8 released in 1988 was the AQ211A (305 chev 210hp). You should be able to confirm this by the serial number stamped on a plate next to the starter motor.

No shift cut out switch on the duoprop. The cone clutch is a very smooth and reliable mechanism but selecting a gear at 1000rpm may be too much for it, its possible the cone is binding and stalling the motor from constant high RPM selection. Changing the outdrive oil may be a good idea also (10w30 or 10w40 engine oil).

Haven't seen electronic ignition on these as standard. The manual quotes idle RPM at 650 and timing at 6 deg at idle. These reading may differ depending on what type of ignition is fitted.

You could also try swapping the carbs to see if the problem is carb related.

Aldo
