Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Jorge22,<br />A motor has 4 basic needs which must be satisfied in order to run. Fresh fuel/oil mixture, compression, spark & a clear exhaust path. Check you motor to make sure all the required needs are met. It's not possible (at least for me) to diagnose the problem with the limited information you provided. Give us more..... :) <br />Backlash

Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

hi jorge<br /> You need three things to make your engine run.<br />Compression, spark, and fuel. We need to find out what is missing. Check for spark, then check to see if you getting fuel to the carb.

Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Even with the compression relief working properly, that engine is hard to start manually unless it's in good running shape. I had a '61 Lark with the hot water automatic choke -- good runner after it's in shape, but not clear yet how far along you are with yours. I'll be curious.

Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

jorge, I may be mistaken but that year motor may need a pressurized fuel tank that must be manually pumped up to deliver fuel to engine.

Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

ALSO. I HAVE A BOAT THAT HAS A IGNITION SWITCH. I THINK THE MOTOR THAT I AM TALKING ABOUT BELONGS TO THIS BOAT. MY QUESTION IS: DO I NEED TO HAVE THE IGNITION SWITCH ON TO ENGAGE THE FLYWHEEL. I DIDN'T NOT HAVE THE IGNITION SWITCH ON BEFORE. BESIDES I DON'T HAVE THE KEY.

Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you should be able to start the engine manually with the switch off -- electric start with a regular magneto ignition. If it has a generator, though, I would take the belt off the pulley first. This should be a single line fuel system, with an optional charging system. (The generator will look like a second starter, and will be connected by a belt to the flywheel.)

Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Jorge..... Think about it..... When the engine is running, the key would be turned off to stop the engine. You don't have a key, and the switch (key) is turned off. This shorts out the ignition. Bottom line is that the engine will not start as the ignition is turned off. Look at the back of the switch. You'll see two black wires there, each one connected to a terminal marked "M". Disconnect one of them (either one). That eliminates the kill circuit and will enable the ignition to function (spark). Note that when you get the engine running, with that black wire off, you would not be able to shut the engine off even if you had a key. Look closely at the face of that ignition switch. You'll see a code number imprinted there. Let me know what is it via my e-mail address of Patton5414@aol.com . I probably have a extra one laying around.

Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Jorge -- The prior post makes good sense re. the ignition switch. If the key switch has a "run" or "on" position, the switch would have to be in that position in order to permit you to start the engine manually. If, however, the key switch is used only to engage the starter (i.e., no "run" position), then the switch would be irrelevant to your ability or inability to fire up the engine manually. Some older models have a starter button which engages the starter circuit -- circuit would be irrelevant to manual starting and running. I wish I had my old Lark, now, just so I could go out and check whether the key switch had a "run" position.<br /><br />Interesting.

Re: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Jorge -- so it looks like you will need a key, assuming the Evinrude came off the boat with the switch you are describing. If so, it's a good time to go through all the wiring while you are waiting. There should be a box on the stern somewhere with a solenoid switch in it, and maybe a voltage regulator (if you have a charging system). In my experience, it's a great nesting spot for little critters.<br /><br />quite a hobby!
