Hi, my buddy has a 2003 Yamaha 4 stroke 90hp ouboard motor that on the Lower unit near the prop...i think that he needs a new gearcase he hit a sand bar on the river...and it busted up the lower unit...from what he says...i think he could probably just get the gear case housing and be fine...he doesn't want to spend $1500 for it though. does anyone know where we could get a used gearcase? i have not looked at his motor...so i am not too sure what all is needed. i am hoping that all the parts are in the gearcase still...seal kits and stuff should not be too bad.

what do you all think? would it be easiest to just buy a new gearcase w/ all the parts in it? i have done work on an old 54 Evinrude 7.5hp so i have some experience w/ outboards...but i am sure 4 strokes are a lot more difficult than a 2 stroke.

If the boat/motor is insured then it will be covered for the damage, minus the deductible. A Yamaha dealer will fix it back like new, but it won't be cheap, I'm thinking in the $2500 range for a new foot. That's what insurance is for.
Good Luck!
