me too Jonesey! I would leave it if it didnt look god awful in person. i.e cracks and crazing or general discolored spots. I love that teel, even though I am a young guy, I go crazy for that color. Go figure that that color would be replaced by doo doo brown, avacodo green and pee yellow one day!

Too Cool,
I paid $250 for mine also, it is (I think) a 1975 Imperial 15' trihull. Just got my lumber today and some fiberglassing material. Mine only has one stringer down the middle of the floor and I got that all cut out and a new one made and plan on glassing it in tomorrow. Welcome to iboats can't wait to see your progress.

Hey we needa start a trihull club!! lol! :DYou otta start a thread on ur project!

Thanks Nico2112, plane tickets are in the mail, bring your grinding clothes...lol:D

Thanks Chrishayes, rather fond of it{steering wheel} myself as well...I had a {blue} 79 Ford dually F350, man that thing could haul anything...miss it dearly at times, then again at 8 mpg loaded or unloaded..don't miss it THAT much

Thanks Jonesg, and thanks for the heads up, I've taken your's and Bob VT's advise and today I added a section of 3/4" ply to the face as well as bolts and a couple of lag screws and another brace support below the holding section, You guys watching out for us beginners means so much ...hope you know that we 'very much' appreciate it...this site Rocks! :D

Chrishayes...thanks for your thoughts on the color along with the rest.. maybe I should give some serious thought to leaving it as is, being both my vehicles are Green, actually the Ford F150 is called Island blue which to me is more of a greenish blue than blue but the name fits well for boating lol, my Jeep Wrangler is a dark green so from a 'stylistic' view{lol} the boat should look good behind either...well that or Joneg's comment about all that buffing is starting to sink in :eek:

LOL Singinout, good Idea, I'm tired of this 'over the hill' club I'm in anyways

I'm all for a tri-hull club as well. I just bought a 65 Johnson 17'. I will have a build thread starting soon also. I have been here for only a few days and learned more than I would have in 5 years otherwise.

I am seriously jealous of your boat, especially the price. I paid over twice that. LOL

I'm in! We can start the "Random tri-hull restorations" club! I'm trying to restore a 1972 15' Chapparrral Tri-hull. So far, I've gotten the motor off and started cutting out the floor.

Gaining, slowly but surely...too many interuptions today :(
removed front seats and backs but forgot to upload the shot... do it later maybe. They were wringable there was so much soaked rotten materials.
Got a question on removing the windshield, think I'll open a new thread for that :confused:

I see that photobucket goes by bandwidth used not file sizes, 25G's already, thanks for looking folks :) Using Imageshack now till they say something lol

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Well, I removed the OB, piece of cake with the cherry picker. Slapped up a temporary shade shelter while I removed the gages and shift control{it was quite warm and humid...finally :)}. Windshield and remaining odds & ends removed, all that remains is the steering fitting.. and some hardware that I'll remove after the cap is sitting aside.. Have the cap fully seperated, but will wait a week before removing, the Mrs decided this is her annual sell our junk week, and it's quite a circus/yard sale with her sister and her mother and herself running around like the 'price is right' contestants lol. And they trash the garage along with having a ton of 'honey do's....

So in the meantime{need another week or so dry time for the ply anyways}, I've got plenty of piddly things to do, ie: cleaning hardware, rewire the rats nest PO was using, going to install a fuse box to avoid having to use seperate in-line fuses. Motor paint prep, etc etc...are you sure theres a light at the end of the tunnel? lol

Things would move faster if I didn't spend half the time starring and daydreaming, lol
Hope your all doing well in whatever your up to!

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Well...got the neighbors together finally to remove the cap, worked quite well by raising the tongue, making lifting the splashwell up over the transom much eaiser and by using a piece of old chain-link fence 'top rail' under the middle section of the cap, the forward section rolled down easily to the stern and up and over she came. I was so excited to get it off to begin the fun stuff, I forgot to plan ahead by setting up the saw horse's{Duh} gives us another good reason to get together tomorrow for another cold one or two{lol}. Sure kick myself now for not installing a more fitting type of door on my shop out back, would of been nice to work from during these on and off showers/storms they're predicting for the rest of the week, Oh well I'm not one to rush into anything, just ask my wife.

Quick question if I may...the transom is stepped down {for the short shaft I'm guessing}, will it help in the strength department to double it up all the way up? I would think so, but I've been known to be wrong on occasion, so would really appreciate any thoughts. My plan is to actually increase the thickness to 2 & a quarter inches from the inch & a half it is now for added strength...all thoughts welcomed...Thanks for looking.

Looking good. You can make the new transom as thick as you want, or as thick as the outboard mounting clamp will allow. Might want to put straps across the top of the hull/gunwhales while the cap is off to keep it from spreading...it will do that.

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Hi there HopeSheFloats !!!!!! I am trying to get caught up on the threads , been busy with mine and work !! Really nice fined !! I see your north of Detroit , how far ?? I am In Burton , just out side of Flint !!

A few things , I dont know if i missed but do you have your wood yet ??? You need to get it drying !! it will take a few weeks to dry at least , in mich, you know how humid it get here so you need to get it drying !!

Also are you useing poly or epoxy?? I looked all over and the best prices i have found any where is USCompostites.com, some great people there, I screw up my order and they called me asking if I was using the epoxy to wet out the glass , I ordered the thick epoxy, and he [ mark] said it wouldnt work I needed the thin epoxy, they could have just sent it and i would have been stuck , but they didnt !! so that counts a lot in my book !! and like i said they have the best prices also on glass and poly and epoxy !!

Ok I guess I have rambled on here long enough , Again , Welcome Aboard John

Re: Here I go, feet first {w/pictures}

Hey, Thanks for checking in folks, appreciate your taking the time and for the guidance...I never would have started this kind of project before finding this awesome site!

Thanks Tmcalavy, straps are now on, and will beef up the transom thickness for ease of mind.

Thanks Nico2112, didn't you get the tickets lol...grinding will commence too soon I'm afraid

Thanks Jcsercsa, I'm in Madison Heights, about 4 miles north of the "D". I get up your way once in a while, my sister lives in Flint, and have good friends in Mt. Morris. Nice to meet ya neighbor! Yes and no on having the ply, have 3 shts{2@3/4" 1 @1/2"} wasn't sure what I was getting into as to stringers
and deck support, oh well..the way I move, shouldn't be a problem if I get some more quickly. I plan to use epoxy as being new to glassing figure I can use any extra good measures I can find. Thanks for the supply outlet tip, will
check them out when I figure{read as 'learn'} what I need...

Did get a chance to start digging today... looks like rot won the last battle... to say the least. My fight with the transom removal was much easier than feared, the rot took care of about 80% and some chisel work with the wonder bar and a thick paint scrapper has it waiting on the grinding sessions to begin. Foam is waterlogged, just pressing the bar against it causes it to flow, so...more trash to dispose of. Didn't cut out the deck far enough yet, wanted to be sure how the steps in the hull would effect my choice of depth and line without guesstimating.

Debating on leaving in a ski-locker like original{but would convert to rod storage} or skip it altogether and run a third stringer up the middle and gain a little more support for my big behind{lol} again any thoughts appreciated...
Cheers to you and yours, hope all is well.....................Kenny

It's good to know there are places like that, sometimes ordering off the internet can be a cold experiance. I thought Jamestown distributers gave me a pretty good experiance also when I ordered paint from them.

Hey John, I'm at 11-1/2 mile and 75, stop by when your in the hood, I'll buy ya a cold soda or something. Yer right, I should leave the storage area in, can never have too much of that. Yes I have a mask, but I can't find it's 'keep dust away' switch..lol

Thanks 68C15, yes these folks are great in offering firsthand knowledge {and free at that!!!} Thanks as well for your tip on the sleeves...The wife's all ready itching just from watching...I tell her it's from the dog's flea's not the f/g ;)

Thanks again KeepNitreel, those are the kind of folks you really like working with but are so hard to find at times, thanks for another bookmark.

Man they used a lot of foam in that thing!It doesn't look like its used for a stiffener for the boat just for sound insulation? and floation purposes my guess,love the color, friend of mine had a 1966 mustang painted the same,
used to live in clinton township myself,mom is still at 15mile and grosebeck,lots of lakes around you especially lake st.clair great smallmouth fishing in that lake,as well as muskie,its going to be fun watching this redo,see ya around michigan.
