Some days you can't win, I rebuilt the starter, just to find the solenoid is dead too, Took the one off of my 115hp and put her on she cranks normal but my battery has to charge over night before running it tomorrow.

Anyways, for anyone that has never seen the inside of your starter. Here she is being rebuilt.

Old brushes they really don't look that worn out.

New brushes installed.

The bottom of the armature after cleaning.

The worst of this job is installing the new brushes. I have a fabbed metal plate that I use to hold the brushes into place while reinstalling the armature and housing. The main thing is cleaning all the contacts and don't install the negative and positive brushes backwards (I have done that before it lets the magic smoke out).

Hey JB your inbox is full.

Boat looks fantastic Sig. Sorry about that solenoid, but looks like just one last thing before a water test!

I've opened my solenoid and cleaned the contacts. Then I just bought a new starter. The brushes were good, but some of the windings were shorted.

I've never opened a solenoid before most have been have basically been wrapped in plastic. The windings looked good, the brushes didn't look to bad, mostly what I found was just a ton of dirt and grime and carp on the bottom of the armature and in the brush plate. I don't think I have ever really seen one so nasty. I honestly think I could have reused the old brushes cleaned it all up and it would have been much better.

Umm Ga a new starter is $90 and a new solenoid $23.00 Just why ?

I drilled four rivets to open the solenoid, cleaned it up and pop-riveted it back together. Still using it with the new starter.

Hopin' for smoke! :D

^^^

Don't forget to hang the FOR SALE sign in the windshield before you pull outta the driveway.

How giddy will you be if you get an offer on the WAY to the official SPLASH & initial shake down cruise?
