Now I know why so many of you righties spend so much time banging away on this keyboard, your waiting and hoping for your wives to fall into a deep sleep before you sneak into bed.
QC I don't know what your problem is, don't know why you let this puter take so much time away from your wife. Maybe I was right about the umbrella drinks.

LMAO, where do I start.

I realize the article never mentioned Welfare persay, but these kids are already in a special school.....and my first thought when reading the article was "what would these people do with money from the government if they got it?" Especially if most of their income goes towards clothes when they admit that their household doesnt have enough money.

No comment on anyone's wives from me.....8) You will notice I didnt include a picture of me and the g/f d:)

Re: Here's an argument against Welfare.

Well - back to the topic:

Are you sure that taking away welfare after a given time will get people to get back to work? I have just read an article from a study in Germany and England where they found a whole generation of young people with parents out of job that have given up. They have no hope of ever getting a job and seriously believe that getting an education will not help them.
Are you guys sure that these opinions sre not widespread in the part of the population that is on welfare? I havent found any US study to support this, but I bet that is a big part of the problem there as well. Treat people as trash and they feel like trash and act like trash....

I dont think that welfare or no welfare alone can solve these problems. Somebody have to work with these peoples minds and give them hope.

ericKems, sounds like you are saying that if you are poor, the state should remove your children from your home. Also sounds like you are saying, that only "libs" would disagree with that approach.

Did I understand you correctly? You want a new government program that will separate children from their parents?

And all conservatives are with you on this?

I speak only for myself, no other. And yes you read it correct. I'm tired of paying for lazy a@@es. You want to pay for them, you can pay more taxes. There are always exceptions to every rule, disability for instance.

so...who's going to pay for your nice new beaurocracy? And who's going to pay to feed, shelter, clothe and educate the children?

If you would have read what I posted, you will see that the welfare the lazy a@@ would have got will pay for it, but no more free ride for the lazy a$$. And if they are working, but not enough to make a living, fine, help them. Minimum wage is not the same as a living wage, but at least they are trying. Don't just send a check because you feel sorry for them.

In other words, no change in the taxes, no matter.

Actually, apart from the facist, Orwellian, "government-knows-best" aspect, your idea is pretty appealing - those poor children are doomed to repeat their parents' mistakes. Because the parents are children don't know any different, can't teach 'em any different, because their parents were children who didn't know any different, couldn't teach 'em any different. So when the children have children...yada yada yada.

The wife used to participate in a big brother/big sister type YMCA mentoring program - it's a good thing for the kids who get involved to have a positive role model - but it only works for children who for whatever reason are motivated to get out of the 'hood.

shock! gasp! a political thread on iboats with an actual original thought! way to go, pony!

I don't think the article implies that "most of their income" goes to clothes; my guess is, most their income goes to food, rent and cable TV...I think the implication is that the money spent on clothes would otherwise go to savings, to be spent on some way out of the ghetto. College or a house in the suburbs or something.
Maybe a nice grill.

My guess is, the thousand dollar jeans are funded by the kids themselves from afterschool employment or doing odd jobs, such as holding up liquor stores, drug deliveries, contract drive-bys [how do you spell the plural of drive-by?], that sort of thing.

Whereas there are some good arguments against welfare, I'm not convinced that this is one of them. No matter how bad your judgment when it comes to spending, you still gotta eat.

Maybe it's like Attorneys General, i.e. drives-by?
