No I am not here to bash. I am looking at some boats and found a really nice 1989 Bayliner 2958 Avanti. I know each boat is different, but in genral any happy or sore 2958 owners? anything specific to look at other than the standard crusier list?

Re: Hey Bayliner owners....

If it's a 1989, it will have OMC Cobra power. My advice is to turn around and walk away. OMC is no longer in business as a supplier of parts for the Cobra and King Cobra power packages, and very, very few parts are even available. If it is a twin engine model, the engines are about 3 inches apart...not the best design IMHO. If you are set on the 2958 (a great layout BTW) look at a 1990. That's when Bayliner switched to Mercruiser power.

Ah said the other Bayliner owner. :D

Yes stay Far away from the OMC powered boats. not the boat but the engine is the issue.

Thats probably why the older runabouts have such a bad rap. Its not the boat but the motor. They (new owner) knew not how to take care of it. That blew up or died that killed the joy. :( And the reputation.

Easy to gas and go then yup it died P.O.S.. No stupid owner who never cracked the manual and should have known to mix the gas and oil.

They can be repaired we have the technology. Better, Faster, Stronger. na na na na!

We just don't have the six million or so. :D

Stuart, your web page on how to identify and adjust the OMC Cobra is second to none. However, your statement that "Original and aftermarket parts seem to be readily available" really needs to be changed. Marine mechanics and boat owners everywhere know that many Cobra parts are completely unavailable, others have been waiting months, even years for parts that have been promised by Bombardier (such as couplers...still none available). A well-maintained and adjusted Cobra may well give many years of service, but heaven help you if you break something.

1989 was one of "the dark years" in my opinion. THat said I like the Avanti series a lot, and it sounds like the one you are looing at is a command bridge. Nice boat, but you were given good advice...

However, if you are in the mood for a project, and the boat needs to be repowered....you might have a nice basis for a project boat, as OMC CObras can be repowered with Volvo Penta drives pretty easilly.
