Hey All,
Just bought a "New to Me Boat" Its a 1985 Sea Ray Cuddy 18ft. With a Mercruiser 224 CID 170 with Alpha 1 out-drive. First off let me say boat is great condition for age and use. Now since I'm completely new to the boat world (mind you I do not have a manual, plan on getting one.) Is there anything I need to know as far as faulty equipment on this engine and or out drive... Such things as maintenance etc. and things i should look out for I.E. so i don't get stranded... lol. Now upon or first voyage to the lake. (Mosquito) (warren, Oh) I think I may have blown my stator or regulator, in there any such way to test to see if one or the other is bad? I did test battery with it under load and at the lowest reading it showed 9.9 volts but did fluctuate between 9.9 and 10.9. I went and had the battery tested and its a good battery. Now with out load it read 12volts. which leads me to believe that I may have fried something... I already looked in to doing a alternator and plan on it this winter. Moving on... if my charging system is fried.... Is there any other less expensive kits out there for the alternator swap? I can't see spending over 500 for a system when its just a mount, alternator, and belt? Is there anything out there that can make this engine perform better and faster ? Like tricks of the trade? Like i said I'm new to this world and love it so far! Thanks for all your help!
