I have a 87 bayliner 240hp omc 5.7L gmv8. Since all my life i couldnt leave well enough alone, I'm thinking of a couple things to "improve" the boat. Should i either

1, performance intake and a new performance marine carb,

or 2, convert to tbi using chevy truck parts.

and while were here, how much horsepower are the bottom ends good for, cause there are two prochargers in the paper here for $1500cdn each.

i think the bottom will hold the horsepower for a carb&intake.the tbi would require the wiring and computer.tbi propley wont make much more horsepower cause they have no mass air flow sensor i would stick to carb and intake.maybe even a small camshaft thats if all that stuff will bolt on i think marine motors are differnt.

First, what exhaust do you have, through hull? if you don't, all the performance mods in the world won't help if the exhaust does not flow well.

I would'nt convert to tbi. check out the bowtie vortec heads available at the GM dealer. They come loaded I think with three different valve set-ups.
Then performance cam, intake & carb. I think that would be the best bang for your buck.

The SBC can Easily produce 500+hp,.......

But,..... You ain't getting there..........

Without a Substantial Investment,+ Increase in HP,.......
You'll never Feel the Difference,...

At 240hp,... You Probably Already have the 4bbl. Carb.....

You'll Break the Drive,.. Or Your Boat before you Break the bottom end of a SBC......

If you Don't like the present Performance of Your Boat,........Buy a Bigger Faster 1..........

There's Alot More to Going Fast on the Water,... Than Just Raw HorsePower...........

You're going to Throw your Money Away with What you're Wanting to Do...............

BTW,...... Vortec Heads alone,.. will give you about 1/2 the figure posted.......... ;)

Does the boat handle as good as it should? Instead of spending the money on more HP, you could spend it on fine turning the overall performance. Maybe better prop and trim taps. Otherwise I throw in with Bondo; if you want to go faster, get a faster boat.

From everything I have read, hot rod boats are not all that reliable due to the weakest link always breaking from being over-stressed. That is why the basic philosopy is to get a faster boat when you want to go faster, rather than modify the one you have. Hot rodding doesn't work as well on boats as it does on cars.

Unless you just happen to have a beefier outdrive ($$$$$$$$$$$) to toss on there, you really should not mess with it. You will not get more performance by installing TBI, but you will get better starting. In the end you are better off just tuning your current setup, or buying a faster boat.
