Re: Hey Lube Dude .... no synthetic til 5000?

I can just see your neck being jerked back an forth Castaway. All these promises then detractions regarding that witches brew aka Synth.

I have/am run(ing) Synth in eight different vehicles since the mid 70's. Always waited a reasonable amount of time, as you said, til "once the tolerances are "self machined" to what I will assume is an optimal level..." before converting.

If you adhere the the philosphy that slipperier? is better, take a heavy, round shank screw driver, dip it in dino oil, turn it handle down and try to hang on to it. Now try same with Synth and see what happens.

Just wait your 5k mi then slap it in. Ya going to keep it for a few years and a gazillion hundred thousand miles? consider additional by-pass filtration to get out those teeeeeny lil particles and you'll get an extra gazillion or so out of it.

So guys, (kinda feel like I'm made to feel stupid for posting here) What exactly did I do wrong starting with Syn. oil, and why would the seals be a factor-the oil drip-and why did they tell me that after the length of time I waited, (50,000) it was too late to go syn. oil????

My 95 Oddysey book says to change the oil according to the little green to orange jobby on the dash. It's basically calibrated to 7500 miles. I've always been a 3000 mile changer and have never been able to last to 7500. Any opinions?

Oldsailor"

Youre doing the right thing, keep it up! Use a good quality oil and do what you are doing and your van will last a lifetime!!

Walleyehed:

I started a post at work before I left, but pushed the wrong button and lost it! I hate it when that happens!!

That was interesting what happened with you and the synthetic! It really is a Myth about synthetics causing leaks, usually it is just the other way around!! If there is a weak area they will find it however, due to there seeking ability! Why the oil "cleaning " agent at 6,000 miles??? Ive found the dino Mobil to not be that great of an oil, Honestly the Chevron oils (with super syn) are a great value as they have a great base stock (almost a synthetic) Like Castrol supertec! and a good aditive package for the price they are hard to beat!! Usually $1.08 at Wally-world!

50,000 miles is no big deal, I changed my Ford Ranger 4 liter over to synthetic at 95,000 miles and have had 0 problems!! If you still want to use a synthetic Id say try it again!

LubeDude

Well.........I may try it again if you think I'm not "too far along" so ta speak.
So you don't like the Mobile then????
If Castrol Supertech (Theres that word again) isn't "true" synthetic, besides Amzoil, what would you recommend?????
Thanks,
Kenny

Re: Hey Lube Dude .... no synthetic til 5000?

I hope Im not opening up a bag of worms here, Ill try to be careful!!

I think you all know where my loyalty lies, But I am not one sided enough to say that Amsoil is the answer to every aplication! I also will not try and talk someone out of using a certain product unless I think they may be actually doing there engine harm by using what they are using, or that they may gain added performance!

In this day and age, There really isnt a truly BAD oil! With regular changes, (3000) Mi. Your vehicle should last a long time!!1-200,000 Miles!
Longer than most will keep a vehicle! However if you like the idea that you are doing you vehicle a favor there are other options! Or if you are towing heavy loads all the time!! With proper filtration the proper oil, and once a year oil analysis, you could do away with oil changes completely! We are talking a bypass oil filter that filters down to 3 microns, Your oil will be clean everytime you pull the dipstick! The oil that is recomended for this is very high in aditives to live a very long time! Also there is new oil being added when you change the filters every six months and the bypass filter every year!

Strangly according to what Ive learned lately, Valvoline is one of the lowest oils on the market, (go figure) Not that it will damage your vehicle, Its aditive package just seems to be lacking in some areas! This however does not apply to ALL of there products!

Chevron oils with the ISO-SYN label, (aplies to the supreme and deseil oils) is a very high end group ll oil, Nearly a synthetic by Castrols standards! At $1.08 at WallMart its a great oil for the price! But looked at as a cheap oil!

A SYNTHETIC I DO NOT LIKE!!

Castrol Syntec is a great oil, I just do not like the fact that they are selling it for a true synthetic at a true synthetic price!! If you are going to pay that much, buy Mobil 1!!!

I think all the synthetics on the market today except maybe the Super Tech Synthetic (as knowone really knows what it is for sure) are good, I just think that Mobil 1 and Amsoil and Redline are the better ones! I think there is a LOT more time spent on trying to keep them on the cutting edge, with true racing experience behind them!! I know that Amsoil is constantly changing there formulas, (sometimes there liturature is out of date befor we get it) That is one of the reasons for not having the API ratings on the oil as they would have to pay for testing everytime they came out with something new! The changes are allways for the better!!

I think motor oil should be regarded as a religion, Ive been studying it for 25 years as a hobby, I think I am obsessed with it sometimes!! I could get very technical about the things I have posted but kept it reader freindly as most do not want the borring details! If you are really curious about oils, ( all kinds ) visit,(www.bobistheoilguy.com) Half way down the page on the left is the forum link, Careful though it can become habbit forming!

Whew!!

LubeDude
