If you've been meaning to buy that cheap Harbor Freight power sander/polisher that is often mentioned in these forums, its now on sale for $29.99 through the website. This is the lowest price I've seen for it.

For a "disposable" power tool, it's a great buy. Don't run it hard and heavy for long periods without letting it cool. Treat it nice and it will last quite a while.

I've been using one as well. Make sure you also buy a 7" backing pad and mandrel. The unit shown only has a "hook and loop" pad and it's allmost impossible to find 7" sanding discs with hook and loop. You also need to buy the adjustable mandrel tool at HF since it's cheaper there than anywhere else.

Here's an action shot with one

Working great so far. When using it for grinding fiberglass, use your air compressor to blow out all the dust from it often. I've found it works great otherwise. Not done with it yet, still more grinding fun to be had, we hope to be able to use it for the polishing phase too -- we're just not that far along yet. hehe

What's the adjustable mandrel? Send a link if you can.

I killed both my 7" and my 4" of that. Went back and got another of both. Great price for what works as well as my Porter Cable, and I don't mind killing them.

You can find 7" hook and loop on ebay for a reasonable price. Only place I've found 7" paper. TONS of 6" paper of you can find a 6" H+L backer. My local HF has that model at $29 almost all of the time. May want to check locally first, as you can just pop in and return it when it dies. Local shop didn't even ask for a receipt, just told me to grab another and have a nice day.

IF YOU ORDER NOW, YOU CAN GET THE 7" SANDING PAD FOR ONLY $3.99!!!!

LOL!!

I ordered two of these 7" pads for use with the 7" resin sanding disks. They don't show it, but there is a small threaded washer looking piece that screws onto the arbor to hold the sanding disk on the pad. They also have it in 5" too.

BTW, PiratePast40, what is an "adjustable mandrel tool"?

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. By now you've probably seen that you need a "pin wrench" or "arbor/mandrel tool" to tighten the washer. They have an adjustable version at HF for $4. A tool store will charge you about $25 for one of those.

Adds new meaning to "adult toy store" doesn't it :)

BTW, for polishing, Makita makes a nice 10" real wool bonnet that attaches hook & loop. Perfect match for that 7" hook and loop backing plate that comes with the HF tool. The Makita bonnet sells for about $16 last time I saw it. Big, fat with rolled edges. Looks like a frisbee that was covered in wool. Beats the heck out of the bonnet that comes with the tool.

FYI - this sander/polisher from HF is backordered until late June. Just checked on my order by calling in.
