Hi and looking for some advice

Hi,

I have been lurking around here for sometime now maintaining 4 outboards for the FSU rowing team. I finally have a problem that I can't solve with the FAQ.

My problem is with a 9.9 evinrude. I was doing some summer maintenance and noticed that the engine was running very rough. And putting out a lot of white smoke. It was so bad that I thought it was only on one cylinder. So I checked it by pulling plug wires one at a time and it stayed running so that's not the problem. I went out and got fresh gas and new oil and mixed it at 40:1 biased on what I had read about the smaller HP motors in the FAQ.

Now it runs better but still not great. I then pulled the air box and adjusted the idle(missing the knob) and it is running better but still a good amount of white smoke. I don't think that it ever did this before but I really can't remember. The odd part is that it starts very easily and idles fairly well for a 20 year old engine.

I am just not accustomed to working on 2 strokes is there anything else I should look at?

The correct fuel mix is 50:1 with best results (least fouling and smoke) using synthetic or synthetic blend TC-W3 oils. Check your plugs for any sign of water intrusion; the smoke could be steam.

Be sure that the thermostat is functioning properly.

I pulled a plug and they look fairly good but it does seam to be wet, almost looks oily.

If it's steam, the plug that water reaches will be clean, while the normal one will be darker, preferably tan, with some black depending on other conditions. The steam will de-carbon a plug. If that is your problem, start by checking your fuel supply, then re-torque the cylinder head bolts.

agree white smoke usually means water, getting in some where, fuel supply or head or exhaust gasket.

I replaced the plugs yesterday thinking that they were just fouled and causing the poor running. I will try to find the old plugs today and take a look to see if one looks cleaner than the other.

Ok, since it was raining all last night and this morning I went out and got new gas and new oil. It took it some time to fire but once it did there was some white smoke then it stopped. I ran the engine for a little bit then I shut it down. About 10 min later I went back and it fired on the 2 pull with no smoke.

So I think I still want to check the head and exhaust gaskets, what is the best way to go about that?
