Hi guy's, I just got a Reinell 1900 for $500 bucks!

I just picked up myself a 1969 Reinell 1900, and the motor has had water in it...

Besides the head gasket failing what's another most likely culprit to let in Water?

I'm new to boating and want to go out fishing and just drive the hell out of the shore lines of Kitsap County. Been craving to do that for some 39 1/2 years, ever since I tossed in my first fishing line at the pier in Illahee at the age of 3!

If I can get this to run it will be worth the wait!

I will obviously have to rebuild it, but I need to know how to ID my outdrive and my motor size.

It's an ugly little GM 4 cylinder, looks like a 2.5L but I'm unfamiliar with Marine applications and it could be a 3 liter for all I know.

I'll let you all help me with that. For right now I'm going out to shoot all the nuts and bolts with some wonderfully effective but expensive GIBBS oil. I hate drilling and easy outing and I hate drilling and tapping when it can be avoided.

I hope this forum is as kickass as my normal hang out Forum. Everyone there I've met have been stand up guy's and Gal's.

Check here for water in the oil info. Many possibilities from a simple fix to a new block.

I'm going to start with the norm. I'm going to remove the intake and exhaust, and then the head this morning and inspect the cylinder walls first.

I'll do that because if it's gotta be bored out I'd rather find a running motor and plop it in with new rings and bearings that go through my machine shop for a Bore and a line hone. (not a lot of cash to put about)

If the cylinders pass my meager inspection and will clean up, I'll then focus on inspecting the head, the manifold and the block for damage, like holes and cracks. I have a Magnaflux unit I can use as a last resort after removing and cleaning up the block.

I found I have an OMC outdrive and a GM Merc 3.0 inline 4 motor. The bell will handle the Large er inline 6 as well but not a V6.

your bellhousing will bolt up to any Chevrolet engine from the 60's to the late 80's... 4, ,6, V6 or V8 small or big block

but your outdrive has bearings and shafts that are maxed out at 140HP, and some would argue they couldn't handle that

The gear ratio of your drive is matched to the torque curve of a 4 cylinder engine

not the norm, and not a good idea to take anything apart. Pressure test the cooling system first

(not a lot of cash to put about)

a 1969 OMC electric shift stringer usually takes BAGS of cash to get running and keep running
You need to evaluate everything before investing any $$
If you dump money into this motor (that probably has a cracked block and manifold), and then find out you're going to have to pay $4000 to get the drive shipped to Toronto where one guy still rebuilds them, you're gonna be sad...

If you aren't wealthy and restoring this boat for nostalgic reasons (e.g. it was your grampa's and his deathbed plea to you was to keep it running), I'd recommend looking for something else...
A 3.0 in a 19 footer is underpowered, and there are lots of parts that are just not available for that outdrive anymore.

look for a Mercruiser powered boat with a Chevy V8..parts are very plentiful and most way cheaper than OMC

Well I already spent $500 bucks getting the boat so that locks me in to a point. I paid for new tabs on the boat and trailer as well which puts me at $600 total...

The engine is TOAST. Sat with Water in the last two cylinders for the last season and a half.

I need to now find another motor to replace this one and I hope it's the same design because I can't afford the motor and also have to buy new intake/exhaust manifold at the same time and still have enough money left to drive it more than a half a league....

The out drive on this is supposed to be working fine when parked.... but supposed to and actually did are two different things, and I dont' even know how to test it without a working motor.

Local guy has a long block for $1500 bucks, and a complete motor for $2,000 and up.

I cannot believe that the actual boats are selling for pennies compared to getting a replacement motor!

I want a put around the bay boat that will comfortable hold 5 people and this one is roomy enough and it was the only thing affordable in the area that size with a very sturdy hull and transom.

Thanks for all the help so far. The Motor is coming out in about 2 hours, I'm going to Break the last two cylinders free then disassemble it, inspect for damage, and probably rebuild it with a pair of new sleeves for the last two cylinders depending on the condition of the cylinder walls.

That sound economical?

Have never seen a $500 boat that was economical, and you better make DAMN sure that drive is working before spending ONE CENT on the engine.

Found me a Motor! It's a 77 but I'm sure it's compatible as it's also on an OMC.

I'm likely getting a couple OMC outdrives as backups and spares with it too! Let you know later today.

How do I determine if the Drive is working????

I'm going out to the shop to pull the rest of the motor now. drop me a call and walk me through an outdrive inspection and I'll be super grateful!

the way to test your outdrive is to put 140HP through it.

Why own a dang boat if you're NOT going to USE IT???? That's the stupidest crap I've ever heard of.

My boat is worth way more because it actually gave someone some memories (and will again hopefully... ), that cabin style you showed me hasn't given anyone nothing but storage fees... What a waste of a decent boat.

Like a retard paying $13,000 bucks for an early Colt .45 or the like and never shooting it. What an maroon he is... If a person OWNS history, I fully believe they should ENJOY it, or they'd be better off looking at it in a sears catalog for all the good it will do them.

I might have me a 140 HP motor and some extras, manifold included inrunning condition this afternoon for less than $500 bucks, which I take to be a decent deal. I'm taking a starter with me and a compression tester and some other tools to help diagnose any pre-existing conditions. I even have a remote camera I can look into the cylinders with...


I dont' mean to be a punk about the advice received here, but if you got it use it, if you dont' use it, why the hell own it? Don't compare that boat on fleabay to mine because nobody ever used that boat, so there is no genuine comparasin applicable. {comparasin is not a real dictionary word but I like it }

Just got an e-mail from a guy with a motor and a 17' 1964 johnson wavey hull fishing boat that's in incredible condition and runs and has all the fishing junk on it and has only seen fresh water for the last 25 years!

Man why does all the good stuff come AFTER I screw up?? LOL

I'm almost there!

Found me a running motor. decently also. TWO outdrives and a Gimble? (the tranny thing) and 4 props and a new rubber boot to go with it all for $400 bucks!

One outdirve is the tall style like i need the other is a shorter version that needs a water pump.

I pulled my output shaft and need to get a pair of new bearings put on it and replace the knuckle that's half worn through. But the second gimble thing I have has a perfect one on it.

I will hopefully be in the water this weekend...

How many GPH do these 2 barrel 2.5 liter engines use up?
