There is no way to stop them. Sorry. Only thing to do is figure out how to live with them, or make money off them. Commercial harvesting seems like it would be a good idea to me. But so far, not much is happening on that front. They make great fertilizer, but it costs money to catch them and process them. More than it does to make other fertilizer. Maybe someone can export them back to Asia as a food source?

With all the other disasters going on(oil spill, wars, etc etc etc) this is unfortunately not going to get much press. People like us seem to be the only ones who care.

You'd be surprised how ignorant folks are...some even think Zebra mussels are great since the water clarity improves...even if the lake ecosystem suffers.

I hope they stick to <20ft of water and don't disturb the fisheries.:mad:

I saw that article earlier today and a thought popped into my head. Could this possibly be the action of someone who wanted to stir up the pot? Someone could have released this single carp beyond the barrier to make the news. The article doesn't say how the carp was caught alive either. Someone could be gaining a lot from the closing of the locks. They would have to put some sort of port on both sides of the locks so commercial traffic from the great lakes to the Miss. river can continue. If this flow of traffic stops, the economical impact will be huge. A bunch of peoples will loose money and a bunch of peoples will make money. I think this is a case of someone using a valid enviromental concern for his/her own monetary gains.

I can't see the US Gov getting to worried, once the sport fisheries is deleted, the fight to export the water across the countryside would probably be a piece of cake. :(

On the other hand, we've survived an onslaught of evasive imported species and I believe the great lakes will handle this one as well, might not be to everyone's liking's, but it's not like we can tell mother nature what to do. Fence's, dams, poisons, it doesn't matter, ballast water seems to be the main culprit, and until we can get a handle on that, we're going to keep running up against new and undesired species infiltrating our waterways...my thoughts.

Eat the damn thing! Rename it to asian bass and eat. I'm pretty sure if cooked properly it will be delicious.

The problem is catching all of them...not what to do with them once they are caught. I have lots of good ideas what to do with those ugly things.

Well, we developed methods of catching other fish to the point that we are restricted to certain number of them caught per day, so we have to find a way how to catch them easily.

Exactly!

Although I can see it now..." Due to excessive, overfishing, causing a near extinction in the U.S. Waterways, as well as a push from (insert activist group here); a size and number limit on Asian Carp have been instituted along with a special permit stamp..."

Man is so smart, he is stupid:confused:

We fail to see that for every "good", there is an opposite. Only after the fact is there concern or thought and at that time, in all too many instances, it is already too late.:(

I enjoy boating the Loop but would much rather launch into the lake than to deal with the aftermath of these parasitic fish!

This has a distinctly political fragrance, which we do not allow.
