thats an aweful motor......send it to me, i will cover the shipping! lol :p

if it was treated alright in its previous life, and you do the basics to it, you should have a keeper!

Re: Hi I just bought a 1965 9.5 Johnson

It was different from what they were building at the time (due to it's lowness) and the pre-cursor to the 9.9/15. I've never had one but have others of the same vintage. I hear if you have to change the lower bellows seal though it's a bear of a job. (at least I think that is the part)

Oh, and if you do want to get rid of it, shipping to Ottawa is a lot cheaper than shipping it to Nova Scotia! :)

Oh, and I have the parts manual for the '66 J9.5 or the '65 Evinrude 9.5 if you want either.. If yes, PM me your email address and request.

Thanks. It sounds good. Looks that I have a motor to fix up for the spring. Ignition points condensers, carb cleaning, impeller, oil seals,etc... Thanks again.

I think they are a pretty good motor.Being what I call a low profile some repair procedures are more complicated than the earlier 10hp it replaces.
The only short coming I have seen is with age the rubber suspension mounts some times fail
and I think that can make the throttle not work right. It seems I've read a couple of posts regarding that.Someone better acquainted may be able to explain it better.

Yea, I had the joy of replacing the shock mounts on a couple of those for a dealership, because their guys didn't have the desire to mess with them. It's not all that bad really. Just a cold 12 pack and some patience and you're done. They are pretty decent motors though. You'll get good service from it.

Re: Hi I just bought a 1965 9.5 Johnson

Dad bought a 1965 Johnson 9.5 new and used it a lot until he got a bigger boat. He kept the 9.5 for duck hunting and finally gave it to a friend in 2007. It always ran great, never gave any problems and was more reliable than the sun. It also looked like it had been knocked around in the 40+ years dad owned it.

I myself just bought a 1967 Johnson 9.5 with low hours. There are handy features like the shallow water drive, numerous stops on the tiller handle, they are light, compact and well balance. And a pain to work on the midsection (carb is easy though).

I seem to recall that the earliest versions (1964 / 65) were known to vibrate a bit, so for 1966 they revised the motor mounts. Dad's 1965 had a dealer retro-fitted special motor mount kit and it ran very smoothly. Carb & timing were tweaked for 1966 for more economical cruising below full throttle, but aside from the low speed throttle stop moved to the twist grip handle mount there really weren't significant changes to these motors. I am trying to go through my 1967 Parts Manual and compare it to the online 1968 version at BRP. So far there is a fuel pump & line difference, plus the intake manifold gasket has 2 additional holes (I think they are for staking the gasket during assembly).

Today I got the coils and started the motor it runs a little ruff it needs a good carb cleaning.Motor mounts are still in good condition no vibration.

Nice thing about that carb, is you can re-kit it, without removing it. It's right there in plain sight. LOL

I had a '69 and the thing was completely bullit proof, great engine.

Once you learn how to set points you are good to go.
