Im trying to remove the lower unit from my Alpha 1 so I can replace the water pump. I have the nuts and allen screw removed from the bottom and the one on top towards the bow. The two nuts on the side are loosened as far as they will go.

Problem is, I cant get the lower unit to budge.

Thanks,
Chris :)

Re: Hi....lower unit removal question.

its most likly corrosion around the studs, you can keep running the side nuts up and use them as jacking screws. you can also use a dead blow hammer and tap the aft edge of the case,do not hit the cavitation plate. if you attempt to edge it dont mess up the oring area on the stbd side about and slighty aft of the center of the case.
some times those well maintained units are a bear to get off.

Re: Hi....lower unit removal question.

I tried to use the nuts on both sides, but Im afraid to break the gear case. I went a head and pulled the whole drive off of the boat, needed to inspect the gimble bearing and u joints anyway. I have removed two allen screws, two nuts underneath, two nuts on the right and left side backed off all the way, and one nut towards the bow on top.

I used some WD-40 on it. I will let it sit until later this afternoon.

Thanks,
Chris

Run a thin flathead screwdriver along the entire mating surface scraping any paint or fouling from the lip.Follow rodbolts placement and tap the driver in the lip just until it slightly seperates. Then flip it over and do the same to the other side.Just a tiny bit at a time.Charlie

Well I got her apart, took some prying. All the blades for the water pump are curved over in one direction...good time to change it.

Thanks for the help,
Chris

Not just the housing but also the seals below the plates.. Replace the stainless steel plates as well as the gaskets... Buy the complet kit.
