I'm bringing a 1958 Hiawatha 3.6 (Scott Atwater), back to life. I have it runnining, but it doesn't pump any water. Pulled the lower unit off to check the impeller, and learned that this motor has a wobbler instead of an impeller. Got a new one ordered from Don, the "Scott Guy".

I also learned from him that this lower unit doesn't take oil, but grease. I guess Lubriplate No.105 Motor Assembly Grease is what I'm supposed to use, is this correct? So my question is, how much do I put in? Is it supposed to be packed in tight, as much as I can fit in it? I already have the front bearing cover off.

Thanks,
Marv

Since you have the cover off and the gears are exposed, load the voids (cover and gear area) with (yes) Lubriplate 105. Since this is pretty thick stuff; grease, you can do that and close it up without it running. This is what I would do. If I didn't have the cover off I'd try to squeeze some Lubriplate throught the bottom (the larger one) screw and go with whatever I could get in there. It's been a while and I'm not sure if the upper small screw acts as a vent or not. With an OMC motor you'd just squeeze gear oil into the lower hole until it comes out the upper. Anyway, I wouldn't get too worried about filling it to the last drop. If you close up the cover and coat as I described you should be good to go. (I have a 48 and a 61/2 Scott 3.6). Don't loose sleep over the last drop.

Thank You for the reply and info.

I'll be getting the Lubriplate this week, and I hope the rotor will be here in the next few days and I can get it on the water this weekend.

This is the last of my project motors this season, (see sig). First one that needed grease instead of oil in the LU.

Then I need to start looking for the next project........... Gawd, she's gonna kill me.

Can't resist making a comment. Last week when the wife asked what was in that big box on the other side of the car was,I told her and she said, " I just don't care anymore, you're gonna do whatever you want!" I thot that meant it's okay, so I went out and bought another one, and told her. She said, "no more, ok?" ..................yeah!

To be honest, I was planning on getting it running, and then putting it on Craigslist to sell, but I think it's kinda cool. When I did get it running in the barrel for the first time, and she saw the smile on my face, she immediately said, "You're going to keep it, aren't you?" :D

I did get her to admit that a late '50’s Fisherman or Fleetwin looked "Pretty". There is hope for me yet....... :joyous:
