I have what I THINK is a 1954 3hp Hiawatha outboard made by OMC's Gale Division, and sold from a Gambles Department Store that I cannot find any info on. The Model number is 538073 and the serial number is 450MI25~7959A. Im having a slight problem that I cannot seem to put my finger on. I can get the motor to start after a few pulls..then it will run for 1~2 seconds and stall out. I have tried to adjust the carb but no matter where its adjusted at, the motor stalls after just a few seconds. I also cannot find much information about this thing anywhere. If anyone can tell me anything about this motor, or what they think the problem might be, that would be great. I also need information on primer knob adjustments, the rich/lean adjustment on the side of the carburetor and troubleshooting. Its orangish/red in color and I can take pictures if anyone is interested. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Re: Hiawatha Outboard

Unfortunately, it looks like you have to be a member to talk to anyone or post anything and it costs money. Any other suggestions?

Also, Ive cleaned the carburetor and its still stalling after just a few seconds. Any help would be appreciated.

Go back to www.aomci.org and click on the Ask A Member board...that's the public site/forum...no charge for that. Try the carb settings in the Top Secret file at the top of the Johnson/Evinrude forum...also try the Awakening A Sleeping Outboard thread to help get you started.

Re: Hiawatha Outboard

Older aftermarket service manuals cover the Gale based 3 hp.
You may find a factory reprint here at iboats. The library sometimes has service manuals.
Most outboards have a filter on the tank outlet (inside the tank)
Check that the float is set right float should be 1/2 inch below the float bowl
lip with the needle closed. There should be a clip fastened to the top of the float with a little screw and a flat spring clip under the float.Gas should come out the prime needle if you over prime it.
initial highspeed needle valve setting is 1/2 turn out from gently bottomed.
Then adjusted warm at speed.

With the line disconnected from the carb does it have a strong flow when you turn on the valve? With the carb empty does the float rise quickly when you open the tank valve?
With the tank shut off does it start and run briefly when you squirt fuel into the carb throat?Does the spark jump 1/4" with an audible snap?Is the plug wet or dry after trying to run?

With the line disconnected from the carb does it have a strong flow when you turn on the valve?

YES

With the carb empty does the float rise quickly when you open the tank valve?

YES, IN ABOUT 2 TO 3 SECONDS

With the tank shut off does it start and run briefly when you squirt fuel into the carb throat?

YES, BUT IT WONT CONTINUE TO RUN IF I CONTINUE TO SPRAY FUEL. WHILE ITS RUNNING I CAN SEE THE JET SPRAYING INTO THE CARB THROAT.

Does the spark jump 1/4" with an audible snap?

YES

Is the plug wet or dry after trying to run?

WET BUT NOT OILY

....What are you thinking? Is there some kind of timing system on this? and if the carburetor opens to the back of the cylinder (ie; I can see the back of the piston) I dont understand how the fuel passes into the cylinder for firing. Is there some kind of fuel line or passage into the cylinder that could be blocked?

Re: Hiawatha Outboard

Fuel and air are drawn into the crankcase on the piston up-stroke, and compressed in the crankcase on the downstroke. At the end of the downstroke, the compressed mixture is blown into the cylinder. You DO have the reed valve on the carburetor flange, right?

You have beaten the gas thing to pieces. Obviously, the problem lies elsewhere. All OMC motors from the 1950's have bad (cracked) coils unless they have already been replaced. That is where you should be looking. When they crack, everybody wants to think they have a carburetor problem.

Just to clarify as the piston comes down it compresses the mixture, when the piston uncovers the intake ports the mixture enters the cylinder through the bypass(intake manifold of sorts)

Thank you again to every one for your help. We were able to meet up with a guy from the AOMCI and got her fixed and back on the water again! Thanks!
