High idle all of a sudden....

Hello. I have a 95 Johnson 175 faststrike. In the fall I replaced the regulator/rectifier and vacuum switch assembly. I seemed to run just fine after. I got it out Sunday to do a little fishing and noticed it seemed to be idling high. Not in gear it idling about 2k rpms and in gear about 1000-1200. Plus it slams going into gear at that high idle. Anyone have any ideas. I'm not real sure what the vacuum switch does. But the old one would squirt fuel out the little pin hole when I pumped the primer bubble. Plus wires and connection was shot from years. I think it has something to do with fuel restriction and will give u warning. Any help would be great. Thanks Chris

You could have a bad osi sensor or one going bad. Find the problem before you damage the lower unit.

Re: High idle all of a sudden....

He meant OIS sensor....optical ignition sensor....and it is on the flywheel cover. Will have wire harness coming from it going back to the powerpack.
If the OIS sensor is going bad, it might have the effect of changing the idle timing, which will alter the idle speed.
It would be a good idea right now to put a timing light on it and see what the actual timing is at idle.
It you do replace the OIS sensor, you should check, and re-set if necessary, both the idle timing and the WOT timing.

Go to shop.evinrude.com and select / drill down into your engine model. Go to the "Throttle linkage" section, and it is item number 24.

Dog, Is the VR on that model right behind the flywheel? If so, sometimes the throttle linkage gets a bit stuck, especially if you were working in that area, and touched it. You didn't change the timing setting, did you?

I'm not sure what the vr is but I didn't mess the timing just put new parts on. I went to shop to look at it again and did notice that when I pushed throttle all the way forward and pulled it back that linkage on top of fly wheel did go back down when I put it back to neutral. I think the little wheel that pushed up on it in full throttle should stay in contact when back down to neutral. What can you use to grease the plastic linkage pieces.

Good eye. Stuck and sticking linkage will definitely to that.
You can and should use OMC Triple Guard grease. You might get away with a good white lithium grease, but that will probably come off quicker.

VR is the voltage regulator. When you said you have changed it, I assumed you would know the acronym for it. My bad.
