Have a 1980 140hp Johnson. In the spring I installed a new fuel pump. The motor was running great.Last weekend I installed an inline fuel filter,[preventive maintenance] now when I use the "cold lever" to start the engine in the morning [something that I've always done] the engine revs at 2500 rpms.,if I try to pull "back" on the lever the engine stalls so now I pull back slowly on the lever and then quickly put it in gear to keep it from stalling. After using the boat for awhile [water sking etc.]the motor runs perfectly starts up no problem, idles at 600 rpms. for as long as I want it to its just that it idles way too high that I'm afraid of damaging something.
So I'm hoping for some advice to help solve this problem.
