Re: high performance parts

A jack plate with some setback is a good place to start; not an engine mod per-se, but a performance mod nonetheless.

Re: high performance parts

You would be money ahead in the long run to buy a bigger engine. You are dealing with a two-stroke engine and there are no after market parts. Fooling with an existing engine generally results in it burning more fuel for very little gain in performance. Work with setup and props. If rejetting the carbs gave a significant increase in performance the manufacturers would have done it for you. If you insists however, dig deep into your wallet and have the block ported, bored, new pistons, custom exhaust tuner, and then after you've blown a couple of motors getting things right, you will come to the realization that "I should have just bought a bigger motor".

Re: high performance parts

your engine is really only about a 100hp after the change from crank rated to prop rated HP in the late 80's. If yours doesn't have the "bubble back" exhaust cover then you could get one along with the carbs off a 140hp crossflow and pick up some HP. I believe the 140hp had larger ports in the cylinders though to help aid in the flow. Personally I would sell it and come up with a couple more bucks and pickup a 115/120 Looper V4 and you will notice a jump in power.

Or, if you really want to keep the engine, port it and if it is not bubble back, get one off another engine. Smooth, match, and radius all passages in the exhaust path. Install Boyeson reeds (may need to go one jet size larger) and you will be surprised at the jump in performance. Had a friend in a Bass club do it on a 90 hp. V4 looper and the engine is HOT. He is swinging the highest pitch prop available( I forget--21 or 23 ), vented to the max for reasonable idle and he still turns 6,000 RPM. Takes a lot of time though-- easier to buy a bigger engine.

Re: high performance parts

Bigger motor seems the logical option.

Re: high performance parts

Many people have tried (been there done that) and when you add up all the time and parts the return is not worth it. Shop for a bigger motor no question about it.

hitace -you can get a outboard Nitrous Oxide Systems form here.they say 40% more power for a few seconds with a push of a button

Not good advice........You need to look at that link. Those set ups are for jet-ski engines and would probably grenade an outboard.

If you really want to beef it up check with the boys at screamandfly.com. Thats what they do for racing them.

Re: high performance parts

Forget about trying to make that motor a racing engine, rather buy a stock standard mercery racing motor, it's all you need ....

Re: high performance parts

th EPA seems to be knocking them off one by one.pretty soon were just going to have big globs of steal that weigh 7898789890 and do 1 mph but make no smog.it seems everything in the world is getting smaller lighter and more compact accept outboard.there doing the complete opposite

Re: high performance parts

I wish the EPA would really look at the total contribution from outboards instead of saying they polute. Most outboards are used to take people to a fishing hole and then shut off and the electric trolling motors take over. People don't run and outboard for thousands of hours like autos yet we are being subjected to the same criteria.
