I have owned many old Evinrudes from 3-70 hp. I recently bought a 1976 35 hp. I noticed that at somewhere around half-throttle, I hear a secondary high pitched whining noise. The motor seems otherwise to run great. Should I be concerned about this?

The same thing is going on with my 1978 20 horse johnson. It runs well otherwise. I'd like to find out more info as well.

I had the very same problem with a Johnson 25. Every time I took it out on the water the high pitched whining noise would start. Then I fixed the problem.....I left my wife at home.....problem disappeared..Ba Dump Ahh...

It is a common failure on these that the starter pulley rubs against ignition scales on flywheel, if pulley bearing is worn. Aluminum dust will be visible on sound insulation inside hood. Adjust by putting washers under pull start housing.

You guys are clever. This sounds like the problem. I will run it easy until I can yank it out of the water and put in the washers. If I have a question about this, I will be back. Thanks again!

G DANE. What do you mean by ignition "scales"? I've been having this same issue. Extremely high pitched whine. I thought it would be coming from the lower unit. Maybe my ears are playing tricks. Lower unit checks out fine.

This post is almost 6 years old. Better to PM G Dane directly.
