Hello all,

I may bee in need of an Evinrude/Johnson 225 hp soon but since I dont know these engines is anyone familiar with best year to look for?

I am thinking older carburated not Ficht/Etec....

What I really want is the fastest and easiest to get some more power with aftermarked things as reeds and maybe high comp head/better induction,

Thanks

On the other hand running a Merc will be cheaper with parts being more plentiful with the advantage of stock offerings offered at 225, 240, 245, 260, 280 and 300 hp out of the box and only weigh 375 lbs or less they can also spin 7k-9k rpm depending on the model

OMC makes more torque for the same given HP but merc makes hp way easier and revs higher safer

If you want to go fast with an OMC all you have to know is 2 words -- Monty Racing. End of story. Getting 9K out of an OMC looper is no problem.

(I'll have the measurements for you later this afternoon)

Hehe thanks guys, I will start with stock engine and work from there but just woundered if they changed to worse over time...

an example:

A friend had a 2003 carburated 150hp, had some small trouble with it, hard idle and was often hard to start....then he swaped boat/engine with an 1996 150 and this engine looks the same under hood but I think some of the emmision control parts is not here, a round part with som cable fuel lines in it on induction side, EVERYTHING seems bettter with this engine, runs smother, better idle, easier start and even feels healtier hp wise to......

So I thought, maybe better getting an older with not so much emission contol things?(if it is what I belive)

The last race motor I had was a 3 liter E-rude. Idled like a champ, great acceleration, turned a little over 9 and was over 300 hp. Fantastic motor and really had the Merc guys going. A big part of the puzzle - to me anyway - was the Baker adaptor plate. They straightened out the exhaust path and dry stacked it in the plate. No hoses hanging thru the pans.

Come to think of it, I still have that mid section..........
