1985 Mercruiser V6 Alpha 1,
Adjusted the lower shift cable and kind of adjusted the shift interrupt switch by bending the tab back just a little. Now when I took the boat out this past weekend, It shifts into gear at close to 2200 rpms with a big clunk! It did however sometimes shift into forward gear at about 1100-1200 rpm's without the big clunk (much nicer). I don't think the shift interrupt switch was working, (probably bent it too much) is that why the high rpm's and big clunk?

Nope,.....

It sounds like you need a New lower Shift Cable...
At the Least...

The outdrive should Shift at 700rpms,... Anymore,+ it'll Grenade.....
And,...
The Switch is only supposed to work when the outdrive is shifted Out of gear,+ only In the water....

my idle was at 700 rpm's and I turned it down to 650, it would before shift fine at about 750-900 rpm's atleast I thought it was shifting fine. It was smooth with just a slight clunk. So bottom line: lower shift cable?

There is no reason you should be bending the shift interrupt switch. That is almost never needed. You obvioulsy have the cable adjustments and shift interrupt switch all messed up. That switch is NOT NEEDED when going into gear, only coming out of gear.
Get your oem manual, and readjust everything back to normal. Then see what happens.

Is there a set length at which the upper shift cable with the plastic barrel should be set at?
(I know the lower is to be set at 6")

Don,
If I do need to replace the lower shift cable, what length cable do I get?
1985 Chapparal 4.3L V6 Mercruiser (although I think you told me a year ago or so, that it's a 3.8L)?

they are all the same with the lowers..... might as well do yourself the favor and get the cable kit with the shift cable bellow in it.
