high voltage

back to my 1972 evinrude 50 hp electric start while running it i noticed the voltage of the battery getting what i consider high 16 volts according to the diagram there is no voltage regulation on this system? only a rectifier is this right?

Most those older motors do not have a regulator. High voltage can be caused by loose and or dirty connections at the motor or battery or the battery could be bad. Have it load tested.

I believe you have an unregulated system, and unregulated systems will do that. Some batteries work better with unregulated systems than others. Sometimes newer batteries solve the issue. Unless you make very long high speed runs you have nothing to worry about. If it bothers you, turn on all the lights and accessories you can. Voltage should drop a little, and keeps from overcharging the battery.
